The Importance of Spiritual Gifts

How knowing and exercising your gift benefits your local church and community

It doesn’t seem as if Christians talk about spiritual gifts that much. Even in the Pentecostal church I attended for a while, the topic wasn’t brought up. The discussion of the baptism of the Holy Spirit might be uncomfortable for some Christians, and undoubtedly, there have been far too many arguments about when and how it occurs. But still, we can’t ignore the reality that each Christian is (however it occurs) endowed with one or more spiritual gifts(Eph. 4:7, cf. Rom.12:6 and 1 Cor. 12:4,11).

“But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it” (Eph. 4:7, NIV).

The importance of this lies in the fact that the gifts are given for the good of the church (1 Cor. 12:7). Ignoring the discussion of spiritual gifts does nothing but hinder the mutual encouragement and support that believers can render each other in the body of Christ.

There are two major lies that have stopped believers from working together to use their spiritual gifts. One is that church is a weekly meeting or building where we worship and hear a sermon.
