The Miracle at Cana: It Wasn’t Really About the Wine

I always knew that Jesus’ first reported miracle was turning water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana (you can find this story at the beginning of the second chapter of the book of John). But I never really understood WHY Jesus would CARE about turning water into wine.

Indeed, if you look at the exchange between Jesus and his mother Mary that takes place just before the miracle, it would seem that He didn’t much care about the fact that they’d run out of wine.

“They have no wine,” she said.

And He said, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” (vv. 3–4, NASB)

But Mary seemed to ignore His statement. At least, she didn’t respond to Him. Instead, she turned to the servants and told them to do whatever her son told them to do. Despite His protest, she seemed to know that He was getting ready to do something amazing. She’d lived with Him for 30 years up to this point. I imagine that maybe she’d already seen Him do some amazing things.
