Even when I walk through the darkest valley I will not be afraid for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me. (Psalm 23:4, NLT)
I’m not in a darkness that paralyses me.
I keep moving. I keep doing what You have told me to do.
I’m walking through a valley where shadows torment, and the sound of Your voice is dimmed.
Am I still hearing You?
I’m distracted by the shadows. I’m confused about the next steps. I can’t hear Your words.
I stop trusting my body to tell me about hunger — about fullness, about satisfaction.
I give into mindless eating to medicate the boredom — to ease the anxiety or fill my empty heart;, easing the loneliness within.
Mindless eating numbs the confusion:
- confusion about what to write
- confusion about what to pray.
- confusion about who I am
- confusion about who You are
I step off the path. Voices from the shadows bring doubt, discouragement and disillusionment.
But, then You speak!
I hear you whisper about:
- What to eat
- When to pray
- What to read
- What to write
- When to publish
- The where, the what, the when and the who.
You direct my steps — one step at a time.
I will not give into fear:
- Fear that I will regain the weight.
- The whisper that I have to be a certain weight by a certain time.
- Fear of missing Your best for me
- Fear of tomorrow.
This is just a valley.
I will keep walking — one step, one meal, one post at a time.
This is my valley today.
A valley filled with shadows where voices from the past scream words of failure and fraud.
I choose to trust.
I choose to trust that You are with me.
Lord, I may not see You, but I feel Your presence pulling me close. Today, I choose to trust You. Your staff keeps me close to You, firmly on the path. Your rod looks for the irritants — for the voices that cause me to miss Your signals.
Where are you?
What is your valley?
Be encouraged. You are still on the path.
Sense His staff drawing you close.
Listen for His whisper.
What can I pray for you this morning?
