What God Requires of Us — It’s Not That Hard. Or is It?

November 2022 Scripture Prompt

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with God. (Micah 6:8, NIV)

People are selfish. We are born with a sinful nature because of our ancestors, Adam and Eve. How can God want us to be good, then? What does it mean to be good in the eyes of God?

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with God. (Micah 6:8, NIV)

In this verse, God has clearly shown us what he expects of us. It’s not a mystery. Why is it so hard to be good in God’s eyes? Let’s take a closer look at what God requires.

Act justly

What does it mean to act justly? I used to think it meant to judge. If someone did something against me, I would be justified to think poorly of them or to respond in a similar way as they had treated me.

That’s not what God means at all. Let’s look at scripture.

Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:31, NIV)

Many know the golden rule, but few follow it. Think about what you would do in the following situations:

  • A friend steals from you.
