In August of this year, we awoke at 4:00 a.m. to the sounds of our dog barking in his crate downstairs and a neighbor using a chainsaw. My husband got out of bed to investigate and realized our home was flooding. He ran down the stairs, towards the room where the dog was but by the time he reached the bottom step, our Brutus was silent.

Frantically, he braved through the rising flood waters, feeling the laminate flooring coming up from beneath his feet, tripping, and stumbling along the way. By the time he reached the dog, it was too late.

The waters continued to rise still higher as he made his way back to the stairs to try to get our kids out of the house before the water made it to the next level. We soon realized, however, that there was no way we could get everyone out safely, so we sat in one of their rooms with our five girls gathered around us and we prayed and sang praises to God together after explaining the severity of the situation.

During this time, we also realized that our chickens also had probably become victims of the flood, and we truly began to fear that we could suffer the same fate.
