When God seems Silent

Hearing God’s voice is a beautiful thing. This undoubtedly will be one of the most valuable experiences of any believer. But does God speak to everyone? And if he does, would that be regularly?

Scripture is filled with many instances of God speaking directly to his children, either through an audible voice (1st Samuel 3:1–10), visions of the day (Ezek. 8:2), visions of the night, dreams (Daniel 4:5, Gen 47:1–7), or some unusual means (Ezek. 22:29–30).

We also recall from the scriptures that God gives instructions per time. For example, he called Moses in Exodus to lead the Israelites from their captivity in Egypt. This was just the beginning of many more instructions. Moses had to follow close instructions from the start of the Ten Plagues till the final release of the Israelites.

Could there have been a time, though, when Moses did not hear God speak?

I have been in situations when I felt I heard God clearly, but sometimes, he seems quiet, even when I have pressing questions and expect a response immediately.

What then should we do when it seems we can’t hear God anymore?

Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. (Psalms 119:89–91, NIV)

When it seems that we have not received new instructions from God about our next move, we need to stick to the last thing we heard him say.

When God speaks, either once, or multiple times, his word is potent and will come to pass.

Have you ever been in a situation where all seems quiet, and it doesn’t seem God is saying anything about your next move?

Pray: Dear God, I feel lost and alone when I pray and seek your guidance, but I can’t seem to hear your voice. Please help me to continue to trust you even when I can’t seem to hear you as loud as I would love to. I know your silence doesn’t mean you are absent. You are working in the background, and all will soon work out together for my good.

Thank you, Lord, for this. In Jesus' name Amen.
