‘You Make Daddy A Sandwich’

Thoughts on Anthony Mackie’s commentary on gender roles

For those who have not seen it, the quote “you make daddy a sandwich” comes from an interview of actor Anthony Mackie on The Wendy Williams Show. You can watch the clip here.

Mackie argued, by implication, that if a woman has expectations of a man in a relationship — such as defending her, opening doors, and picking up the tab on dates — then a man has an equal right to have certain expectations of the woman. In this case, fixing him a sandwich when he is hungry.

But is Mackie right? Do men and women have distinct roles in a relationship and should they bring these expectations into their relationship? To this question, I would answer, “yes and no.”

Where Mackie is Right

Mackie is right in believing that men and women are not the same and their roles are not interchangeable.

When God made the man, he gave him the task of working and keeping the garden of Eden.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.“ (Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭15,‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

Additionally, God gave Adam his law to obey.
