Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) doesn’t have an exact translation in English as it is just part of the Danish way of life. It is a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in simple acts making everyday things more beautiful, meaningful and special. It is cosiness, charm, security, happiness, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship and simpleness.

It is more of an experience than a specific action, creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things with good people. The Danish concept of Hygge is said to make homes nicer and people happier. Generally it is done in pairs or with groups of people — family get-togethers, lingering over a coffee and a chat or sharing a meal. However, one can hygge by themselves — lighting a candle in the morning, sitting in front of the fire with a book and a slice of cake, or snuggled under a blanket with a movie and hot chocolate.

Hygge is about taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary things beautiful, meaningful and special. In today’s fast-paced, modern, technology driven world, it is important for the mind and soul to be able to bring oneself back to the present and spend quality time with family, friends and ourselves.

January is often the month people dread, it’s cold, dark and wet, and people are desperately trying to stick to their new year’s resolutions. However, it doesn’t have to be a month of doom and gloom. It’s the start of a new year, it should be celebrated and enjoyed, and being more hygge could bring us the cosiness, comfort and companionship that we crave at this time of year.

Six ways you could hygge this January (cake and candles are mandatory)

  • Spend a day snuggled under a blanket surrounded by books, magazines, films, your favourite hot drink and some chocolate
  • Meet a friend you haven’t seen in a while for tea, cake and a catch up
  • Make a coffee and savour the early morning at home before you head to work
  • Invite friends and family over for dinner
  • Grab some drinks and play some boardgames
  • Listen to your favourite record

How are you bringing hygge into your life?
