Hello Redditors,

I’m Zhiqun (the Co-founder of Kopi Date). I’m grateful for your perspectives. I’ve learned a lot, and for that my Co-founder and I are genuinely appreciative. 🙏🏼

Working on Kopi Date has been an immensely rewarding journey, albeit with its own unique challenges.

About Us:
We started Kopi Date as we both believe dating should be more humanised, genuine and authentic. It’s true! We met each other on a dating app. 🙂 I was addicted to dating apps then; constantly uninstalling and reinstalling them, yet feeling lonelier than ever. But this time around, Jing was different — she asked to meet up barely after 2 exchanges and when we did, we connected almost instantly over our shared beliefs about the apps, among other topics and passions. We became close friends. From there, the friendship blossomed, and we got together after starting this then-passion project Kopi Date (which I will bias-ly give most credit to for bringing us together ;)).

Our mission is simple:

We aim to humanise dating, encouraging our members to foster long-term, fulfilling relationships.

We aspire to help individuals shake off the jadedness that can stem from endless swiping and motivate them to take that first step towards meeting someone new. We’ve cultivated a community that values safety, support, and personal growth. We are also fully aware that sustaining a healthy relationship requires continuous learning, support, and a constant desire for self-improvement. We have incorporated these principles into our ecosystem and resources such as our Growth Course.

In real life, dating is messy (expectations, egos, past experiences and baggage). We’re not here to sugarcoat or romanticise it, but to empower our members with the right perspective and reframed mindset of what a win in their dating journey could look like for them. For some, it’s simply getting to know themselves better. For others, it’s getting to have their preconceived notions of people torn down, and their horizons broadened. Whichever the case, we always encourage that and hope our members see Kopi Date as a playground of growth, a space where they can find the courage to step out of their comfort zone.

I want to stress that we are not a matchmaking agency. While we curate members based on conversation potential, interests, values and take into account social norms, past date feedback and religion, we discourage members to come in with long checklists/preferences. Based on research, these often do not help with forming deeper connections or long term fulfilling relationships.

Over the years, we’ve found our best fits are growth-minded, curious individuals seeking meaningful, authentic connections. If this sounds like you, we invite you to try Kopi Date for yourself.

Pricing

Affordability is one of the key factors we had when designing our pricing. At the cost of an average gym class, you can meet a curated someone to go on a planned date at a comforting locale, complete with a crafted date experience kit and even a simple refreshment provided, on top of personalised advice on how to improve and be a better future partner and additional supporting resource materials.

(Many of our members have joined Kopi Date because they believe it’s priced more reasonably compared to other options in the industry, which can be easily 10–18 times our price point.)

Addressing concerns:

  1. On Reviews: We do not have any ‘moles’ on Reddit or fake reviews. Each and every one is an authentic review by our members (including the one highlighted above — she purchased ad-hoc date credits as she enjoyed her experiences and would like to go on more). Nonetheless, when our members have a really positive experience, we do encourage them to share a review. 😊
  2. On Fake Members: All members whom you meet via Kopi Date are authentic paying members (i.e. singles joining Kopi Date with the intention of meeting someone new). We talk to each and every one of our members via Kopi Date Brew so everyone is verified by our team. We do have a small group of gift card members (i.e. members who receive Kopi Date gift cards). We are cautious in giving such complimentary Kopi Date credits to new members as we have found that such recipients are more likely to give less-ideal experiences, due to their lack of skin in the game (which is also the reason why we don’t do free trials). Naturally, if you have questions on your date — kindly let our team know so they can support you.
  3. Communicating Memberships & Billing: As we’ve expanded, we’ve implemented systems to ensure full transparency in our pricing and memberships. We communicate pricing details across our website, advertising, and FAQs, and every Kopi Date Onboarding call includes a thorough overview of all membership information and our billing processes. Our Onboarding team’s duty is to repeat and clarify all these details including how billing works, underscoring our commitment to transparency. Every call is followed by an email outlining various plan costs and downgrade instructions, to ensure our members have immediate access to all necessary information. We hope this clears up any questions about our memberships and billing. However, should you have any further questions or need further clarity, we encourage you to reach out to us. We are more than happy to assist you.
  4. On Members App: We have recently launched our mobile app this year and we are gradually ramping up on it! This was set in motion when our Kopi Date community of members shared their honest and valuable feedback with us, that our previous web-app was not entirely user-friendly, and they had issues navigating certain functions. We heard every single one of them, and that’s why we’re looking to up our game via gradually investing in a native app. Do look out for weekly updates and improvements!

Lots to Improve:

If you made it through all of the above, we thank you for taking time to understand Kopi Date and allowing us to address your concerns. Building Kopi Date has been a tremendous learning journey for all of the team, and we are always, continuously improving and growing along the way.

I want to take this chance to appreciate every one of our members for their patience in sharing feedback with us and taking the time to drop a note. We take all feedback seriously and strive to improve on what we do to provide a better overall experience, from marketing to communication on memberships. We’re committed to ensuring our mission and objectives align with the experience we deliver.

We are (mostly) bootstrapped, mission-driven and in for the long run. What keeps us going are the kind words of current members who have genuinely benefitted from what we have built and we look forward to growing more along the way! We will continue to bring affordability, authenticity and truth to the dating space ❤.

P.S.: We’re working on some exciting initiatives too, stay tuned!

Thanks for listening and sharing your feedback :)

Warmly,
Zhiqun
