Seoul Euljiro: New Area for Cafe Hopping
My Korean friend told me Euljiro has become a trendy area recently, so he took me to explore a bit in this area last time. At first I thought Euljiro? I have walked past this area so many times, what is so special about it? After I did a bit of searching, I found out that this area has got a lot of interesting cafes and it is an area with many artists too.
This area had an important role in the modernisation of Seoul in the 70s and 80s, but slowly it became an “aging” district, when young people started to forget this area, some artists moved here in search of cheap rent. With an abundance of small shops selling different materials, it is a very convenient location for artists and designers. Although this is a relatively “older” area, it is located at the heart of Seoul with convenient transport.
One of the newly renovated places around here is Seun Sangga, this arcade is well situated for artists searching for cheap rent and also materials for their work. For us, maybe more importantly, its rooftop is a good location overlooking Jongmyo and if you go there in autumn, you can get to see fall foliage around Jongmyo area here.

Check out this post about Seun Sangga I wrote last year.

In my last trip to Seoul, my friend took me to one of the cafes called Jaan (unit for counting cups in Korean). In this place, you can choose your own favourite glass/cup for the drink you order. You can drink coffee here in daytime, at night, wine is served.
The entrance is quite inconspicuous with a sign on the top of the door and another placed outside on the pavement.

My friend’s original intention was bringing me to a cafe, but he didn’t know this place only serve wine after 7pm.

When we arrived, the whole place was almost full, these pictures were taken after most of the people left, and in the left lower pic you can see the cups and glasses available for selection.

There is also a rooftop place, but it was raining heavily that day, so no one was up there.

This cafe called Cafe Hanyakbang is also one of the most popular cafes in this area, the interior design of this place was done in a 1920s style which is currently very trendy in Korea. You can read a bit more here in my previous post.

If you are really into cafe hopping, you can check out more cafes here in this Euljiro cafe map, even though it is in Korean, you can check out the design of the cafes and see which one you like the most to plan for your next trip.
