Checkerboard design from a pint milk carton soap mold.

Checkerboard soap is great for gift idea, especially for kids too! Children think this is like a cookie.

Milk carton really works well, 1 quart or 1 pint work the best.

I used half gallon size, it is bigger than my palm! Hahaha

This is the recipe. Total is about 3000 g, with water and fats, so if you use 1 quart, you need at least four carton, and inside another four carton. If it’s too many, divide them by two.

271.2 g Sodium Hydroxide ~ https://amzn.to/3mVRPXO

Measure sodium hydroxide first. Just make sure you choose the right bowl.

AZTL are the reacting ones. Aluminium, Zinc, Tin, Lead containers are not allowed, glass is also slowly but certainly reacting. So, please choose stainless steel or number 5 plastic, HDPE plastic container would be okay.

406.8 g Distilled Water ~ https://amzn.to/3jE44WA

Using ice cubes are great for reducing temperature in lye. It doesn’t take too long to have cool downed lye water.

Oh and the fume too. Ice water actually reduce the unpleasant lye fumes.

271.2 g Sodium Hydroxide ~ https://amzn.to/3mVRPXO

Add sodium hydroxide to iced water and stir. You need to wear mask, long sleeves, gloves, and goggles.

It’s a very strong alkali. It will actually get into deep skin level, damaging your skin.

600 g Coconut Oil ~ https://amzn.to/38y8yrz
600 g Shea Butter Natural ~ https://amzn.to/3mVyzta

Measure hard butters and oils to warm up.

Use double boiler to melt them. Microwave, the temp keeps going up but some hard butters are hard to melt in microwave, so I recommend doing double boiler method.

If you have latex allergy, shea butter has natural latex in it, so substitute with mango butter or cocoa butter instead.

If you substitute any of butters or oils, please use soap calculator, use SAP value from each butter and oil, get right amount of NaOH.

800 g Olive Oil ~ https://amzn.to/3n2r3N8

Now measure olive oil.

I usually disperse my mica or colorant into some of olive oils.

20 g Citric Acid ~ https://amzn.to/3ltK9JV

I already told you in previous posts, citric acid becomes chelator in soap.

So when you have hard water with lots of mineral, soap scum is produced. But this chelator will prevent soap scum.

But it doesn’t neutralize the ph level of soap.

Mica ~ https://amzn.to/3t99HiN

Disperse mica and titanium dioxide into oil. My titanium dioxide is water dispersible, so I added water too.

Add warm oils to olive, make sure it’s not hot. Mix lye solution and fats.

The temp is usually, below 55 C or 120 F. If it’s around that, just wait for few more minutes. If it is hot, the soap batter becomes a soap in a stick.

It’s a small amount, I used a little of hand mixer.

And divide the batter into two.

If you want to make chocolate cookie, use brown black instead of pink red.

If you want to make matcha or green tea cookie, you may use green color!

Mix thoroughly, and done!

The olive oil I used in this recipe was extra virgin. Extra virgin is usually in greenish color, it’s hard to get pure white. Use light olive oil if you want to make very bright white.

Then the molds we need are milk cartons.

I recommend using 1 quart or 1 pint, but half gallon is fine. But just make sure, it will come out really big, huge!

Get two milk carton, and use one for the inside mold.

These mold are not tightly closed together. So the bottom would be all mixed up. That’s totally fine.

I poured them at around tracing 2–3, but anyway it will be divided by the inside mold, it should keep its shape.

After you’re dong pouring, take the inside mold out gently.

Tada! You don’t need to buy a mold, you can still make a good soap. Half gallon is not recommended, and too big to hold.

As I see, 1 quart is good size. Oh and 1 pint, less than 500 ml, is also cute size.

After 24–48 hours, you can take it out from mold.

It might be hard to get perfect checkerboard design, but it’s still beautiful soap :)
