Grocery Store Soap Making Project with Lemon Juice and Maple Syrup

It’s been a long time! I was obsessed with how to work with Kickstarter projects, now I have some time to work on my soap blogs, haha.

This time, I am showing you how I used the common ingredients from grocery store. Soaps using lemon juice and maple syrup.

Especially for those who don’t have the citric acid at home, it’s easier to get lemon juice instead.

Maple syrup, on the other hand, you can substitute with honey, sugar syrup, rice sugar syrup, fruit sugar syrup, etc. Any liquid syrup will work. We need some kinds of sugar in liquid form, it doesn’t have to be the sugar.

I’m in love with all the swirls I can make with soaps.

I love one bucket pouring method with all colors in one, but this way, pouring one at a time, is also awesome to see.

These are the lemon juices and maple syrups I’ve used, they were in my fridge.

It doesn’t have to be something new. You can use what you have in your kitchen. BUT, sometimes it’s not 100% lemon juice, or it’s not actual sugar content. So you have to read the ingredient list.

Here is the recipe.

40% Lye conc. 5% Superfat
433.5 g Distilled Water ~ https://amzn.to/3jE44WA
289 g Sodium Hydroxide ~ https://amzn.to/3mVRPXO

740 g Olive Oil (47%) ~ https://amzn.to/3Iq7tSU
400 g Coconut Oil (30%) ~ https://amzn.to/3tcPnNM
400 g Canola Oil (20%) ~ https://amzn.to/3CmRrpw
60 g Castor Oil (3%) ~ https://amzn.to/3zqGlxM

20 g Himalayan Pink Salt ~ https://amzn.to/3Cta5fv
20 g Maple Syrup ~ https://amzn.to/3kKeMua
100 g Lemon Juice ~ https://amzn.to/3MerWwD
20 g Cornstarch ~ https://amzn.to/3zEYW9H
20 g Mahogany (Fragrance) Oil ~ https://amzn.to/35dsi5H
2 g Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE) ~ https://amzn.to/3gV0Mwp
Mica ~ https://amzn.to/2YOZw8y

433.5 g Distilled Water ~ https://amzn.to/3jE44WA
20 g Maple Syrup ~ https://amzn.to/3kKeMua
100 g Lemon Juice ~ https://amzn.to/3MerWwD

I’ve prepared the water first. I added maple syrup and lemon juice in distilled water.

And now you may ask, how am I supposed to know how much I add the lemon juice? I calculated based on the acid percentage on supermarket lemon juice. Research says the usual grocery market lemon juices have 3.9% of acid. So here’s the calculation.

100 g of 3.9% Lemon Juice would add 100g x 3.9 % / 100 = 3.9g Citric Acid.

20 g of 68% Maple Syrup would add 20 x 68 / 100 = 13.6g sugar.

Yes, they are just estimates. We are not sure exactly how many grams of acid or sugar content would end up in soap batter.

BUT, good thing is that, it doesn’t really hurt the soap to be the soap. If you substitute all the water to lemon juice or vinegar? It might hurt your soap, but it’s just not that many anyhow.

60 g Castor Oil (3%) ~ https://amzn.to/3zqGlxM

Castor oil actually helps on keeping the bubbles, I add it all the time.

740 g Olive Oil (47%) ~ https://amzn.to/3Iq7tSU

I just love the olive oil myself, you don’t have to use olive oil to make soaps. Some people prefer lard, some likes grocery oils, I just like olive oils because they seem to be mild.

If you want to use the different oil, please use soap calculator to make adjustment.

400 g Coconut Oil (30%) ~ https://amzn.to/3tcPnNM

Coconut oil definitely helps on bubbles, large, big bubbles. But when you put more than what you need, it can cause some skin irritation or allergy reaction.

If you would like the mild soap for sensitive skins, I think it would be nice to have coconut oil around 10–20% max. I usually use 20%, but this recipe is for men anyway, I used 30% because men tends to love big bubbles.

2 g Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE) ~ https://amzn.to/3gV0Mwp

I originally started with vitamin E as well. But, vitamin E, based on the experiment, doesn’t much help on orange spots. And ROE actually helps.

All of my soaps need ROE because I superfat more than 5% mostly. I calculate my oils at 5% superfat, then I add some milk or yogurt as well. That’s extra fat. That’s why my soaps are so soft and mild to use. If I don’t use ROE, that all fats are going to be ruined within three to six months, I saw it with my eyes.

ROE is different from rosemary essential oils.

20 g Cornstarch ~ https://amzn.to/3zEYW9H
20 g Mahogany (Fragrance) Oil ~ https://amzn.to/35dsi5H

I usually put a fragrance oil into powder forms, such as cornstarch or clay powder a day before or at least three to four hours before.

And this way keeps fragrance oil in the soap longer. Sticking some fragrance oils are very hard, especially for orange and citrus fruits, and this way works best for fragrance oils.

I used the corn starch because it’s easily found at home. But you can use kaolin clay, any powder forms.

400 g Coconut Oil (30%) ~ https://amzn.to/3tcPnNM

Now add coconut oils to oil bucket, it’s easier if the coconut oil is cooled down.

If it’s hot, then soap will trace a lot faster, so please cool it down for few hours.

740 g Olive Oil (47%) ~ https://amzn.to/3Iq7tSU
400 g Coconut Oil (30%) ~ https://amzn.to/3tcPnNM
400 g Canola Oil (20%) ~ https://amzn.to/3CmRrpw
60 g Castor Oil (3%) ~ https://amzn.to/3zqGlxM

All the oils I used. Coconut is only thing we need to warm up, and olive, canola, castor can be added in room temperature.

289 g Sodium Hydroxide ~ https://amzn.to/3mVRPXO

Now we are going to mix all the liquids, starting saponification process.

Mica ~ https://amzn.to/2YOZw8y

Oh and don’t forget to color your fats.

In this way, you don’t have to use mix more with blender, which is less acceleration.

With white mica, still it’s not that white. But, anyway, mix the mica with fats, then it’s easier to color the batch.

433.5 g Distilled Water ~ https://amzn.to/3jE44WA
20 g Himalayan Pink Salt ~ https://amzn.to/3Cta5fv
20 g Maple Syrup ~ https://amzn.to/3kKeMua
100 g Lemon Juice ~ https://amzn.to/3MerWwD

You need the distilled water, then add salt, dissolve all. Then add maple syrup and lemon juice, and the temperature will go up again, so we need some time to cool down as well.

Then, we will pour the lye solution to fats, or vice versa.

With blender, mix well, up and downs.

Without mixer, it’s really hard. I mean really. With hand mixing, it takes at least 30 minutes, and it doesn’t even make that great soap, and arm really hurts, anyway, get the blender.

After some mixing, and you can see the temp goes up a little, that’s it. Now we can color some batch with mica.

Mica ~ https://amzn.to/2YOZw8y

I used blue and gold mica. Some mica will fade after few weeks or some mica will fade right after saponification. That’s not good.

So double check the product review, if they can stay well in CP soap making, or go to soap supplies store, then ask for the mica test sheets.

Anyway color them nicely. What you see is pretty much what you get.

I don’t really love using lots of mica in soaps, but when you use it, you have to use some to color nicely.

And put some more mica, so it would be vibrant. First, add some soap batter, then stir mica, then add more soap.

Oh and since I stirred some long time, I didn’t get the … third or second stage of acceleration, because I make sure everything I add is not warm.

Everything I add to my soap is pretty cool, stayed out for at least three to four hours before I make soaps.

At first I poured the background color, it was pretty watery.

So I poured all, if it were thick, you can pour, then add the color batter, then pour in between.

With this thin watery liquid stage, you can just pour the colors later.

Now pour the other color, try pouring from high. If it were poured from lower height, it wouldn’t really make any swirl.

After orange one, pour the other one.

I thought it would be blue, but a bit of green now.

Well but the swirl is really cute.

After 24 to 48 hours, take the soap out of the mold.

As you can see, beautiful marbling is done!

The point is soap batter has to be very thin.

Well, I love making milk or yogurt soap so bad, I prefer soap making in very low temp.

And I think that’s why the way I’m doing is working for swirls as well.

After packaging, it’s good to be shipped out. You can see the swirl from the outside.

The scents was mahogany, which is kind of the smell of furniture, preferred by men, so it was a bit popular.

You can see how I worked on the swirl with the video.
