Recipe for Basic Bath Bomb Making!

The first thing I recommend for people who love DIY bath products at home!

The ingredients are relevantly safe, easy, and if you fail to make one, you can still use what’s left behind.

And of course, the quality per price? It’s really affordable and fun! Especially with kids.

And today, I made a few small pink bath bombs with edible strawberry powder.

These are the ingredients!

70 g (2.46 oz) Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) ~ (50%) ~ https://amzn.to/3miyeRk

30 g (1.05 oz) Citric Acid Powder ~ (22%) ~ https://amzn.to/3xXmYf3

20 g (0.70 oz) Epsom Salt, Magnesium Sulfate ~ (15%) ~ https://amzn.to/37VkuDs

10 g (0.35 oz) Arrowroot Starch ~ (7%) ~ https://amzn.to/3kc57fy

1 g (0.03 oz) Polysorbate 80 or Shea 50 ~ Emulsifier ~ (1%) ~ https://amzn.to/3mfjeUb

1 g (0.03 oz) Fragrance oil ~ (1%) ~ https://amzn.to/3syceml

2.5 g (0.08 oz) Food Powder ~ Strawberry Powder~ (2% or less) ~ https://amzn.to/3j1bWBr

3 g (0.10 oz) White Kaolin Clay ~ (2%) ~ https://amzn.to/3xWnaLK

Food Coloring Few Drops ~ https://amzn.to/380app0

Rubbing Alcohol ~ https://amzn.to/2WbPqwv

And this one makes four very small, baby palm size of mini bath bombs. Or just one big bath bomb.

So use the percentage behind the name, multiply by how many bath bomb you want to make.

If you don’t have anything, you have to buy the ingredients, then you can only have baking soda and citric acid to make fizzes.

Epsom Salt, Magnesium Sulfate, Starch; these are for your own bath experience. They really make your skin smooth, but if you don’t own them, you don’t really need to use them.

You can substitute Epsom salt with Himalayan Pink Salt, or Sea Salt, and Starch with any starch, flours.

70 g (2.46 oz) Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) ~ (50%) ~ https://amzn.to/3miyeRk

I think I frequently go to Costco to get olive oils and baking soda.

You might have at home, usually people have baking soda for cleaning, pool, or baking purpose, so get some from it.

30 g (1.05 oz) Citric Acid Powder ~ (22%) ~ https://amzn.to/3xXmYf3

I guess you might need citric acid. But I am thinking, if you are interested in natural way of cleaning, you might have some also.

They sell in Amazon, in really small quantity, so it might be better to get one from there. Or Target, anywhere.

Usually I calculate the ratio as 2:1 in baking soda : citric acid.

20 g (0.70 oz) Epsom Salt, Magnesium Sulfate ~ (15%) ~ https://amzn.to/37VkuDs

And as you know, you can still make fizzes with only baking soda and citric acid 2:1!

But if you want more of good bath time, need some spa mood, then I recommend adding these two ingredients.

Magnesium Sulfate is the one you know already, it’s not a table salt. If you are interested in bath products, you might see this often. When you consume, it tastes bitter, so we use it as bath salt. And so the skin absorbs magnesium in some studies.

I also heard that Epsom salts can relax your muscle cramps, tiredness, but you can always substitute this Epsom salt with pink salt or sea salt. Your table salt might be too clean, no mineral contents, but still. You will have some sea salt somewhere in your kitchen I assume.

10 g (0.35 oz) Starch ~ (7%) ~ https://amzn.to/3kc57fy

You know I always do experiments with ingredients, I took out the starch one time as well.

But starch makes the water super smooth. And it makes last longer. If you think cornstarch is edible (not for bath), or considering GMO, and that makes you uncomfortable, you can use other flours as well.

You can use cosmetic starches like arrowroot powder (https://amzn.to/38cVfwN), or tapioca starch (https://amzn.to/3kcXDZV).

All starch would work, potato starch (https://amzn.to/3z2MS2D), rice flour (https://amzn.to/2W7D7BF) even.

2.5 g (0.08 oz) Food Powder ~ Strawberry Powder~ (2% or less) ~ https://amzn.to/3j1bWBr
It really feels uncomfortable. Yes, it’s the edible strawberry powder.

I use it for milk shake for kids with milk… hmm.

I think cocoa powder would do just same, but mine is premixed with sugar.

If you have honey powder, dandelion powder, these would make a great bath bomb as well!

3 g (0.10 oz) White Kaolin Clay ~ (2%) ~ https://amzn.to/3xWnaLK

My dearest Kaolin Clay. I would love to use more and more in any bath product, but the price is just too high.

Rose clay, Kaolin clay, all the cosmetic clays will make your skin super smooth and feels so great, I love them. The price is just … I wish they are affordable like cornstarch.

When people want to make their soap natural, I recommend them using these clays to color. Especially white Kaolin clay makes white color.

Food Coloring Few Drops ~ https://amzn.to/380app0

And for coloring, this is your kitchen friendly recipe, so I put food coloring. I see some people are uncomfortable already.

But buying extra mica and oxides, who would do that, if you don’t make these regularly?

But you know, these food coloring, this one is with water. So when you add them, your batch will react to it, and make fizz a little.

But you know, it’s for coloring, we are not adding a bunch. So it’s okay.

1 g (0.03 oz) Polysorbate 80 or Shea 50 ~ Emulsifier ~ (1%) ~ https://amzn.to/3mfjeUb

And this can be optional for you also.

The polysorbate 80 is, kinda emulsifier. It makes water to mix with oils.

Why do you need this?… for your bath tub ring issue + fragrance oil usage.

Especially bath bombs with totally, very strongly, severely colored, they sometimes leave you with a ring in your bath tub.

And this polysorbate 80 makes oils mix with water. The ring in a tub is gone.

But I still don’t want it, I want natural way of doing it! Then, you might want to use Shea 50 instead. Shea 50 is from Shea Butter. You can get this from soap supplies store or lotion making shops.

And for fragrance usage, the fragrance is also an oil content.

So, when you think of water, and put some oils, you will see they don’t come together. Oils are not water dispersible.

And so your bath water. If you just drop some fragrance oils in bath tub, it will not be dispersed in a water. And so we use polysorbate 80.

Rubbing Alcohol ~ https://amzn.to/2WbPqwv

I have this rubbing alcohol since I have two boys at home.

70% alcohol and 30% water, a small amount doesn’t fizz the batch, but when you don’t think of it, it gets exploded!

So spray some, and mix, see if you can make them in a shape, and spray little again.

And press or squeeze to see if they hold their shape.

Spray the alcohol in surface, and mix well, it will come in shape.

I thought I would make a big bath bomb, then I just used a little molds for kids. I have two kids, so they are going to fight over one big bath bomb.

I made four little ones. The ingredient list is for very small quantity.

Put the batch in two molds, and press hard.

As the water evaporates, the harder it gets.

And put some more in one side so when mold is pressed, it can make a nice looking ball shape.

And just press really hard. Some will sneak out of the mold, that’s alright.

And take out of the mold, you can get your bath bomb.

I think I spray a little too much at first, the ball is getting a little bigger (…).

If they don’t get sealed, that’s easily fixed.

You can either break them, and put them in a mold, press hard, or keep that half ball shape in the mold, spray some alcohol, then put some more on the top, press really hard.

Some big chunks can float on your bath tub, but it will fizz soon and dispersed in the water anyway. Haha.

See how easy it is to fix.

It’s okay to fail. You can make square bath bomb, that’s all fine.

Like making dumplings, you can just grab some, make a grip, that would still be okay, as long as you can use them.

If you don’t have the sphere mold, you can use cookie mold, or brownie molds. This is very fun and easy project with kids.

You can press hard, if it doesn’t work, you can spray some alcohol to stick.

And when your batch is dry, it all got dried out, you can spray the alcohol again and mix again.

You can also use witch hazel instead of rubbing alcohol (https://amzn.to/3z7XNba).

These small sized mini bath bombs, or one big bath bomb, it’s your call.

If you know how many oz or gram your mold holds, you can multiply that number for each ingredients.

Or just make a whole bunch, and think of the mold later!
