Student houses are notorious for poor decorations, dodgy finishes, and mismatched furniture. Even if your room looks nice, what about the living room and bathrooms? Whatever state your current house is in, it’s not all doom and gloom! Here is a guide with some simple ways to spruce up the different rooms in your student house and make it extra-homely.

Use plants as decorations

Plants are a great way to give life to your living room, especially if they’re in nice pots. Different houseplants have different needs, so if you’re likely to forget to water them, why not opt for something low maintenance, like a Cast Iron plant or a ZZ plant.

Move the furniture

If you don’t like the furniture in your house, why not rearrange the layout? Carefully planned rooms can seem bigger, and create more space for cooking or movie nights! If you have extra furniture you don’t need, why not contact the landlord and see if they will remove it for you?

Paint the walls

Looking at dirty walls, or walls where the paint is peeling, can be a big reminder that a house isn’t quite the way you want it to be. You can ask your landlord to paint, but this may take a while if they agree at all. Instead, it might be a good option to ask the landlord if they will cover the costs of you painting the space yourself. Always opt for a neutral colour, and make sure you have written permission before going ahead.

Here are some colour ideas:

Add better lighting

It may seem like a cliché to add fairy lights to a student house, but there’s a reason they’re so popular! If you want to go for something a bit different, why not opt for a coloured lamp or LED candles? Choosing the right colours will make the room look cosy.
