The National Union of Students (NUS) works in partnership with hundreds of brands and companies to bring discounts to UK students. In previous years, students needed to buy an NUS or NUS extra card to benefit from these discounts, however, this has recently been replaced with TOTUM, the next generation of NUS card.

TOTUM card

There are two parts to a TOTUM card, firstly the holder is entitled to UK discounts online and instore from over 200 brands. Secondly, you will also have 1-year free International Student Identity Card (ISIC) displayed on your TOTUM. This allows you to benefit from 42,000 international discounts and is accepted as proof of student status in shops in over 130 countries.

The TOTUM card can be bought in the following ways:

1-year card = £12
2-year card = £22
3-year card = £32

If you buy a 2 or 3-year TOTUM card, you will only have a 1-year ISIC membership, which can be renewed separately.

How do I apply?

Time to apply for NUS card: 5 mins approx.

Because TOTUM is the new name for NUS Extra, you can head to the NUS website or straight to the sign-up page. You will need a valid email address that you can access from your institution and a photo of yourself (this can be taken during the application process). It’s best to try and avoid mishaps…

How do I get the most out of TOTUM?

In order to fully benefit from TOTUM, you can download the app. This groups together all available discounts and can tailor them to your likes. It is also one of the quickest ways to search.

Some of the most popular offers include ASOS, ODEON (25% off student ticket prices Monday-Thursday), Amazon Prime membership, and the Co-op. The NUS also partners with technology brands, restaurants, and (for a little extra money) Gourmet Society.

The Gourmet Society add-on costs between £7 and £15, and allows students to get up to 50% off food-only bills, 25% off total bill, or 2-for-1 meals at popular restaurants.

What else should I know?

A full list of terms and conditions can be found here, but we’ve included a quick summary of some points below:

  • In order to be eligible, you will need to be in education for at least 10 hours per week, for 12 weeks.
  • The TOTUM isn’t proof of age
  • You must be at least 16 to apply
