Despite her Japanese given name, Megumi Acorda is a Filipina musician known for being a member of the Manila indie pop band The Strange Creatures. On her solo debut EP Unexpectedly, however, Megumi strays away from the band’s usual sound, moving into dreamier dimensions instead.

The title track showcases a sensible mix of dream pop and shoegaze a la Slowdive, featuring swirls of distorted guitars and ethereal harmonies.

Nevertheless, the song is not reliant on studio wizardry or the dark arts of guitar pedal sorcery at all thanks to her plain yet authentic songwriting.

I’m sure it would still sound as dazzling if it were purely acoustic, yet I wouldn’t want to miss out on the song’s hauntingly beautiful guitars and Megumi’s airy vocals.

Recommended for fans of Slowdive, Beach House, Cigarettes After Sex

Disclaimer: It is worth noting that the title track has been floating around for quite some time on the internet since it has been released nearly three years ago, but I sadly didn’t know of its existence at the time. I stumbled onto the EP on Bandcamp some days ago and because its official release date seems to March 2018, I just assumed that all the material on the EP was released around the same time.
