It has been a while since our last update in Jan 2017. Operational details take up most of the day in our small startup’s life that we sometimes miss sharing details of our work with the external world. With that caveat, here is another installment of where we are as of June 2017.

Krishi Janani is now at a major transition / growth point. We have been quite successful with the centers that launched in Jun 2016. Currently, the two rural centers successfully serve hundreds of farmers by virtue of their physical locations. The next step for us — How might we scale this in such a way as to serve thousands in the two districts? And, many, many thousands beyond the two districts?

The future holds a mix of physical (rooted to a place), mobile (traveling centers), transient (events based), and virtual (technology enabled) expansion for Krishi Janani. We are working on the challenging aspects of what, when, where, and how all of this will take shape. Stay tuned for updates in our scaling efforts.

With that brief update, here are the numbers and charts from Krishi Janani’s membership database as of Jun 25, 2017

Member Stats

Krishi Janani Farmer-Member Network Profile

Good news — our membership has almost doubled in five months. Bad news — Premium Membership (the paid version) did not see any growth. It is a really rough time for farmers in Tamil Nadu who are facing a historical drought, the worst since 1876! Therefore, it is not a surprise that Premium Membership numbers are not going up.

Farm Profile

Small Farmers :)

Still going strong. 62% small farmers. 34% medium farmers. A total of 96% in the population that Krishi Janani really wants to serve.

Organic Farms :(

Of our 2,638 farmer-members, only 27 (1.08%) classify themselves as fully organic. 68 (2.73%) are partially organic.

Membership Age :/

Growth in the 60+ age group of farmers — from 10.9% to 14.55%. A tiny spurt in the 20–40 age group — from 29.1% to 30.81%. It will be interesting to see how this changes as our efforts around technology-enabled farmer services begin.

Member Gender :)

Number of women farmers in our network is still stuck at 7.2%. Thankfully, unlike our previous reports, it did not reduce further. So, that merits a smiley.
