Creation and Science
Creationists and evolutionists have the same facts. Think about it: we all have the same earth, the same fossil layers, the same plants and animals-all the facts are the same. However, the way we interpret the facts is what makes us different. By using facts about carbon dating, thermodynamics and mutations, I will give examples of how creationists and evolutionists interpret facts differently.
The element carbon-14, known as C-14, is unstable and slowly decays. Only living things contain C-14, and when an organism dies the amount of C-14 decays slowly over time. By measuring the amount of C-14 left, a date of death is determined. This is called carbon dating. However, many make presuppositions when using this dating technique.
One of the presuppositions is that the decay rate of C-14 has been constant. However, all scientists know that the production of C-14 can be affected by solar radiation, the earth’s magnetic field and volcanic activity. These things can cause Carbon to leach out of a substance quicker. What does this mean? It means that C-14 doesn’t always decay at the same rate. Well, what does that mean? It means that scientists don’t really know that the earth is billions of years old, they just base their conclusion off of an assumption made beforehand. Hopefully, knowing this will make you question the next scientist that says, “this in fact is 5 billion years old.”
Creation scientists have presuppositions too. The Bible is counted as the Word of God and absolute truth. When they look at a fossil or the remains of a dead animal they believe that it cannot be older than 6,000 years old, because the Bible’s genealogical record does not allow the earth to be more than 6,000 years. Another example of how a creationist counts the Bible to be true is when he looks at the millions of rock layers and concludes that it was caused by a catastrophic event, like the worldwide flood that was recorded in Genesis.
Creationists and Evolutionists have a different view on how the world got started. Evolution can refer to the belief that random, undirected forces produced a world of living things. However, it is against all known logic and all laws of science to believe that the universe is the product of nothing. The law of conservation of matter says matter cannot be created nor destroyed. This concept is similar to hoping that an empty bank account will suddenly give rise to billions of dollars all on its own. If we could get a billion dollars to rise on its own, it would have to break all laws of science. Therefore, there must be something supernatural that can break the natural laws of science, i.e. God.
The word “evolution” may refer to changes of one living thing to another, such as reptiles into birds. According to CQ Researcher’s, “A Message From the Alabama Board of Education” published in 1997, this process, called macroevolution, has never been observed and should be considered a theory. Answers in Genesis has an article called, “Mutations” by Dr. Gary Parker published on January 1st, 1994. It says they have abundant evidence that mutations occur, like this picture that shows some of the changes that have been brought about in fruit-fly wings because of mutations. But there are major problems with trying to use mutational change to explain evolutionary change.
Mathematical challenges are written up in many books and widely acknowledged by evolutionists themselves as a serious problem for their theory. For example, let’s say the earth is 5 billion years old. According to calculations, 5 billion years is only 10¹⁷seconds. Huxley, an evolutionist, estimated that the odds of the evolution of the horse is 1 in 10³,000,000. Even if the earth was 5 billion years old, the universe still isn’t old enough or big enough for this to happen. Why isn’t this conspiracy found in our textbooks?
Upward or downward? As far as evolution is concerned, mutations are going the wrong way. Mutations explain genetic breakdown not build up. What I mean is mutations have produced defects of certain genes, they aren’t and cannot be “the means of creation.” In other words, mutations don’t create; they corrupt! Both logically and observationally in science, the ordered state must come before mutations can disorder it. Mutations are real, all right, but they point to a corruption of the created order.
All you get as a result of mutation is just a varied form of an already-existing gene, i.e., variation within family. For example, there are many kinds of dogs with the dog family: wolves, Dalmatians, great Danes, pugs, chihuahuas, poodles. However, they are all dogs. There are many kinds of cats with the cat family: leopards, tigers, jaguars, Bengal, ragdoll. They are all cats. Therefore, mutations point back to creation. How so? In Genesis God said He created all of the land animals according to their kind.
What about archeological evidence? Please google “Biblical Archeology” because it has free ebooks. Did somebody say, free? One of them is called, “The Dead Sea Scrolls-What they really say, by Hershel Shanks, 2007.” The Dead Sea Scrolls are manuscripts of the Old Testament books. The first seven manuscripts of the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in a cave in the country of Jordan. Imagine yourself trying to keep your goats together and safe but there was always that one that was stupid enough to climb too high up the cliffs and hide in a cave. This happened to the goat herder, Juma, so he decided to climb the cliff to bring it back. Little did he know he would be involved in the greatest archaeological discovery in the twentieth century. This led to an official archaeological expedition. It began in 1949 and eventually resulted in the discovery of ten additional caves in the surrounding area also containing scrolls. Finding the originals has allowed us to see if the Bible we have today was preserved and translated correctly. The answer is yes! The scripts are at least 2,000 years old and many were preserved in clay pots.
I want you to rethink the presuppositions evolutionists have made and to consider the evidence the supports God being the Creator of all things. One way is to search out Biblical archeological evidence. Are you just going to accept what people tell you or search the truth for yourself? Not only is it good to look through secular glasses but it is good to see through Biblical glasses as well. Reading books and going to websites like answersingenesis will help broaden your perspective on science and God. The author, Lee Strobel, is one of New York Times bestselling author. Lee has a journalism degree and wrote about his journey of questioning a dozen experts with tough questions, entitling it “The Case for Christ.” You will find over and over again that God and the Bible are confirmed by real science. My action step for you is the same as Lee Strobel’s. At the end of his book he wrote, “However, as I sat at my desk, I realized that I needed more than an intellectual decision. I wanted to take the experiential step. Looking for a way to bring that about, I reached over to a Bible and opened it to John 1:12, a verse I had encountered during my investigation: “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” He goes on by saying, “The key verbs in that verse spell out with mathematical precision what it takes to go beyond mere mental assent to Jesus’ deity and enter into an ongoing relationship with Him by becoming adopted into God’s family: believe+receive=become.”
