About “Wealth,” the 2016 Kristiania Annual
Wealth — This book collects twenty-one pieces from members of Kristiania contemplating the theme of wealth. Some of these stories, poems, drawings, and photographs deal directly with questions of affluence and class as they affect individual relationships. Some explore the different types of meanings of wealth. Some tackle the consequences of the uneven distribution of wealth for communities and societies. All are deeply personal and urgently relevant to the challenges facing humanity today.
When we decided to bind this book by hand, we saw the process as a reflection of what we value most about Kristiania: collaboration, community action, the sharing of resources and time, and a dedication to working in ways that go beyond established forms of publishing. This process was exhaustive and beautiful. By working through each step — the printing, the folding, the binding, the cutting — we took every decision that went into creating this book into our own hands. Experiencing the physical building blocks of a book, we learned to appreciate the hard labor of a form of publishing that values writers and their work.
