Kristiania Salon, May 2018
This month’s literary salon was hosted in Little Italy, Manhattan.
Stephanie Russell-Kraft wrote this month’s discussion topic:
Last month, author Junot Diaz was lauded for a piece he wrote in The New Yorker about his experiences and the impact of being raped as a child. Weeks later, multiple women came forward to say he had sexually harassed and assaulted them. In the aftermath, the usual debates took hold: how do we hold artists accountable for bad acts, and how does it impact how we view their work? So my question to you is: what do you do with writers and artists who let you down? And what expectations, if any, do you have of them? I’m less interested in hearing what we should do with them publicly or collectively, and more interested in hearing how each of you approach this problem on a personal level.
