My Google Maps app is broken. So I thought. I only started using Google Maps on my android phone this year when I realised that I had permitted to be used on Wi-Fi only. Funny thing when I needed it most while using mobile data. Once I turned that off I have been enjoying the Google Maps app. I am currently a Local Guide on the app-which anyone can be.

Once you are signed in to your Google Maps you can use it to get guidance on the nearest services centres. The Google Maps relies on your current location to give you the accurate information. As seen above, I could see the ATMs, pharmacies and restaurants approximate to my then location; their service hours and contact details.

Map Type on Google Maps app

I am looking forward to visiting the Mercado restaurant as I have heard rave reviews about this Mexican restaurant in Nairobi. Since I’m not sure of the exact location, I resort to the Maps on the phone. A quick check-up on the Google Maps App enlightens me. There are three map types on Google Maps: Default, Satellite and Terrain View. The Satellite view is especially helpful when you have never seen the building before. It gives photo-like views. You can easily switch views at the tap a button.

Overview and Reviews on Google Maps

You get to read other people’s experiences at a particular place on the app. The reviews are unedited and you can trust the app for honest feedback. This is good for potential customers as they will have an idea of what to expect. For business owners, it is a source of motivation and a pointer on where and to improve. However, it is good to point out that another person’s experience may not necessarily be your experience. You may see good reviews of a place and what you get there will be-wild you. Local Guides can also provide images and videos under their review. You may as well say seeing is believing. This content is very realistic and comes really handy especially if the business does not have a website or an online display of their products or premises.

On the overview, you can see the contact details of the business where you can directly call the business. On the popular days and hours, you are shown when the place is a hit. In addition, you can see the operating hours and days. This way you can plan ahead your visit. Once you view the reviews and photos, you can save it in a list. You should check out the questions and answers section of you have any doubt or a question yourself. You can also ask a question if you are still not able to find your answers. This way the business owner can give you an accurate answer or the community can help out. There are two default lists: favourite place and want to go. You can also create a custom list. All the lists are shareable.

A guide on transport mode on Google Maps

When planning a visit, use the app to check the best route to use. It also gives you a heads up on which mode of transport can be used. As seen in the images below, it shows how long it will take to walk to and fro Mercado Kitchen form my then location-12 minutes in total. As you can also see, an Uber app popped up to show a fare estimate.

Google Maps is there to help you get around. Another thing for Android phone users is that since you can’t delete it, you might as well use it. Download offline maps in the case you need to check directions an you have no internet connection.

Hope you find this helpful. Let’s get around more easily with Googl Maps App.
