Myths Busted: Are Women Better Drivers Than Men?

The debate over which sex is better behind the wheel has been going on for a long time, but contrary to popular belief and the stereotypical myths of society, women can drive too and have even outscored men not only in car tests but also on the road, on a normal day.

Now, this may come as a shocker to some while some others may already be making unfunny women driver jokes, but we have evidence that proves when it comes to driving the car, there shouldn’t be a prejudice simply based on gender.

Women are Attentive, Cautious Drivers

How you drive a car has more to do with your driving style rather than if you are a man or a woman. While men are competitive, aggressive and drive at faster speeds, women prefer to take a more attentive and focused approach. While men love the thrill of risky driving behavior, women are more likely to be protective and cautious, especially when children are onboard.

It’s all about Perception

The power of the mind can be a funny influence and even more so when it controls previously held notions. It is so difficult to understand whether men are naturally confident drivers than women or are simply more assured drivers because they are perceived to be better. So also, the belief that women are weaker drivers inevitably plays in your mind and so affects your performance and proficiency.

Men Take More Risks Compared to Women

Not adhering to norms, driving higher than the speed limit, coming in close proximity to other cars, drunk driving, using a cell phone while driving and not wearing seat belts are found to be more common scenarios among men. They tend to get a kick from risks which explain why they take lesser time to park (although they are more accurate) and go for particularly sharp turns. Women, on the other hand, play it safe when it comes to driving tasks and so are adept at knowing how not to get carried away by one’s hormones.

Men are More Prone to Accidents

When it comes to the occurrence of accidents, the driving records of men are not seamless. Since they indulge in riskier behavior, they are more likely to be at fault during an accident and are also more likely to get a ticket for aggressive driving. However, following the graph of the current situation, it seems to appear that women are catching up too. Today, women are independent and more confident and so there is an increase in women drivers. An increase in women drivers also means an increase in aggressive driving, speeding and serious accidents. Like we said earlier, it is not about the gender, it all depends on your driving style.

It all Boils Down to Caution

It appears that men tend to get distracted, especially when they see an attractive face on the road. On the other hand, women tend to be more careful and show a lesser risk of getting distracted by a handsome hunk on the road. The mileage of men driving a car is also higher when compared to female drivers, but that doesn’t mean female drivers are lagging far behind.

Regardless of gender, it is imperative to balance caution with confidence to ensure safety on the road. Distracted driving is an absolute no-no. Never take your eyes off the wheel and ignore all things that interfere with your concentration.

So remember ladies, it’s not just enough to have your driving license in place, when on the road; you’re on a whole new ride altogether. Do not let previously held notions and myths bog you down. Rather, drive carefully and confidently and you are sure to conquer the world in your four wheels with style.
