Texting and driving has become a significant cause of road accidents across the globe. The teens as well as the adults are often found guilty of texting with one hand while having the steering on the other. 1 out 4 accidents in United States occur due to such distractions. Texting while driving is a serious threat to everyone on roads and to curb this, the state of New York passed the regulation in 2009 banning mobile phone usage when you are at the wheels.

About the law: The law states that no person shall operate a motor vehicle while using any portable electronic device while such vehicle is in motion.

This means you cannot:

  • Hold your device while looking at it
  • Take or share pictures
  • Play games
  • Read, type, or send text, email or any other electronic data.

The penalty for violating the law:

  • Fine up to $150 plus mandatory $85 surcharge fees which is a total of $235
  • Violation also carries 5 Driver violation points. If you accumulate 11 points within a period of 18 months, your license will be suspended. This means two infarctions and you are a hair’s distance away from losing your license.
  • Those who are driving on a permit, junior license or probationary license will have their license suspended for 120 days on the first offense and one year for subsequent offenses

Exception to the law:

Emergency respondents are exempt from these laws. Also, if you are or have been in an emergency and you are trying to communicate that, you might be exempt from the above law. However, we recommend not to try your luck
