In the ever-evolving realm of gaming, trust is a precious commodity that can be hard to come by. Traditional setups rely on centralised authorities, but this approach falls short when trust cannot be established. But there is a powerful ally emerging on the horizon: Zero-Knowledge (ZK). A game-changer that enables trust in gaming components by generating irrefutable proofs, eliminating cheating possibilities, and ensuring players commit to the cards they receive. But what’s the true opportunity lying at the crossroads of ZK and gaming? Join us as we explore the link between ZK and gaming, guided by Ramiro Ramirez, software lead at Kryha. If you’re new to ZK, start by exploring Down the Zero-Knowledge Rabbit Hole for a crash course on this groundbreaking concept. But, if you’re already familiar with and hungry for more possibilities and use cases, read on!

Why ZK & gaming — what’s the link?

Trusting others on the internet can be extremely difficult, and in gaming, it becomes crucial to ensure fairness and mitigates cheating. Traditional setups rely on a centralised server as an arbitrator, but this approach may fail if trust cannot be established. Because who decides what is considered good or bad? Bitcoin’s Peer-to-Peer technology showed a new path, but it had limitations for certain game types. And this is where ZK comes into play. ZK enables trust in gaming components by generating proofs, ensuring that players commit to the cards they receive and eliminating cheating possibilities.

By leveraging ZK, we can create a secure and trustworthy gaming environment, even in incomplete information games like poker.

The link between ZK and gaming is the ability to address the trust challenge in online interactions, providing a foundation for fair and enjoyable gaming experiences.

And what’s the opportunity?

The opportunity lies in revolutionising the gaming industry by introducing a new level of trust and fairness. ZK empowers players to engage in games without the need for intermediaries or centralised authorities, promoting a more decentralised and transparent gaming experience. By embracing ZK, we can create immersive and secure gaming experiences that players can trust and enjoy. The potential for ZK to address the trust challenge in online interactions opens up new opportunities for innovation and creativity in the gaming industry. It paves the way for a future where gamers can experience a higher level of confidence and integrity, enhancing the overall gaming experience for all.

How is Kryha using ZK in the context of gaming?

We are utilising Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology to enhance the gaming experience through our game development project called Boloney!. A unique game that combines elements of dice and poker, creating an exciting incomplete information game. Our aim is to cultivate trust among the players and to achieve this, we have chosen to leverage the Aleo platform, which offers comprehensive abstractions to generate proofs and apply them to game mechanics. These mechanisms ensure that the gaming experience is fair and transparent. By incorporating ZK principles, we create a secure environment where players can confidently participate, knowing that their actions and outcomes are protected. Through our adoption of ZK technology and the Aleo platform, we are pushing the boundaries of trust and innovation in the gaming industry. Our goal is to deliver immersive gaming experiences that prioritise transparency and fairness, revolutionising how players engage in online gaming environments.

What was the most challenging part of the development process?

To achieve true randomness. While analogue elements like dice naturally possess randomness through factors like rolling, generating genuine randomness in digital environments proved complex. Instead of relying on computer-generated randomness, we opted to use randomness generated by the users themselves. Each user generates a random number and provides proof of its correct generation. However, the challenge lay in obtaining the initial seed for the generator. To overcome this, we implemented a commit and reveal mechanism, resulting in a quasi-random outcome that meets our needs.

By employing commit and reveal mechanisms, we establish trust among players, ensure fairness, and prevent cheating.

What does Boloney! mean for developers?

Boloney! is a game-changer for developers in the gaming industry, revolutionising the landscape in several ways. One significant aspect is the simplification of the development process. By leveraging existing work and protocols, we can move complex mathematical concepts into practical proofs-of-concept that developers can readily work with. This means that developers no longer need to possess extensive knowledge in every aspect of the domain, but can instead focus on building more intricate and advanced features. Boloney! enables developers to tackle higher complexity in their projects, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in game development. It provides a platform where developers can unleash their creativity and create innovative gaming experiences without the burden of starting from scratch.

So, how can ZK impact the gaming industry?

ZK technology has the potential to revolutionise the gaming industry by allowing the development of decentralised games. It enhances privacy and trust in online multiplayer games, giving players more control over their gaming experiences. With ZK, game governance can be community-driven, empowering players to actively participate in decision-making. This technology provides developers with advanced tools to create more complex, user-centric, and private gaming applications. By embracing ZK, the gaming industry can usher in a new era of user empowerment and heightened data security, shaping the future of gaming.

A big thank you to Ramiro for sharing his invaluable insights. For those curious, be sure to check out Boloney! to experience the power of ZK in gaming.
