https://coinmarketcap.com/ is a reliable source that you’ll find convenient in analyzing Cryptocurrencies. If you are into Cryptocurrency then you often check coins price, analyze the market capitalization and its trading volume. Whatever coin or token it is; the first thing that comes up in search results is CoinMarketCap. This is the website where most users end up to compare cryptocurrency valuations. Just look at the traffic analysis of Coinmarketcap over the past 6 months:

Coinmarketcap pulls data from hundreds and hundreds of different crypto exchanges worldwide, so the live price of each coin is the most comprehensive price of all other sites out there. For those who don’t know, every coin on every exchange trades at a slightly different price — so having a site that gives the average-most price of all the exchanges combined is a great resource to receive the most unbiased information.

Once you head to coinmarketcap.com the first thing that you’ll notice is the table with the list of top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalizations. The table displays the name of the coin/token, its market cap, price, volume, 24-hour change and the price graph of the coin for the past 7 days.

For starters, the currency is in the US dollar (USD).

People buy bitcoins using their fiat currency, so they usually want to know the price in their own currency so that they can better estimate their current losses or gains.

For example: if I buy $1,000 worth of bitcoin (BTC) in Euro (EUR), I’m going to want to know what the price of bitcoin is in EUR.

To do this, I simply go to the top right corner and switch the default currency to EUR.

The first column in the table shows the name of the cryptocurrency. This list by default contains both coins as well as tokens.

you have an option to exclude coins/tokens from the list. You can choose to show only mineable coins and you can also list the entire cryptocurrencies that are in their database. Just click on the Cryptocurrencies tab and you’ll see various options to filter Cryptocurrencies.

Next, we should look at the top bar of Coinmarketcap for other useful information.

  • The first item is “cryptocurrencies: 2112”. This means that there are 2112 different types of cryptocurrencies listed on Coinmarketcap.
  • The next important figure is the market cap. The market cap shows the total value of the entire cryptocurrency market. It is calculated by multiplying the price of each individual coin by it’s circulating supply and then adding all 2112 of them up. You can also find the individual market cap of every coin next to the name.

Market Cap = Price x Circulating Supply

  • The next one is BTC dominance. This shows the percentage of the total market cap that bitcoin takes up. This means that, at the time of writing this article, the market capitalization of bitcoin makes up 53.7% of the 181,491,772,153 market capitalization of the entire cryptocurrency market.

Followed by market cap is price, 24-hour volume and circulating supply.

Price is the current value of a coin or a token. It simply shows how much a coin or token is worth.

Volume is the total worth of amount that has been traded over the past 24 hours. For example, in the above image, you can see that in the last 24 hours €3.106.434.228 worth of Bitcoins has been traded.

Just click on the volume numbers and it will list all the exchanges where that particular coin has been traded largely.

Circulating Supply is the total amount of coins that are in public hands currently. Also if you look at circulating supply then some coins will have a small star (*) next to it which means non-mineable coins.

Change (24 Hours) and Price Graph (7 Days): The change in 24-hour value tells whether the value of a coin has increased or decreased in the last 24 hours. You can use this column heading to see which coin has gained or dropped in the last 24 hours.

CoinMarketCap not only displays top Cryptocurrencies. But it also displays Top exchanges based on 24-hour volume rankings. If you click rankings on top of the page you can find up-to-date lists off different exchanges where you have different options like adjusted volume, reported volume and 24hr volume.

Every day several new coins and tokens are being added to CoinMarketCap database. If you’d like to find out new coins and get in early then you can dig through CoinMarketCap’s recently added list. Drop down trending and click on Recently Added to view all the new coins that are listed on CoinMarketCap website. On the same menu, you can also find the biggest gainers and losers.

Last but not least, you can find handy tools in the ‘tools’ bar like global charts, historical snapshots, an interesting currency converter and glossary.

In time you will find www.coinmarketcap.com to be the base, from where you can start to take a deeper look in different currencies and perform your own due diligence or fundamental analyses.

Enjoy!
