Key government thought leaders are being encouraged to take part in a new Blockchain education course in the American state of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts, known as a hub for educational, technological and industrial innovation, is driving the blockchain revolution across a number of fronts. The state’s capital of Boston already has a thriving Blockchain Association that is working towards developing the area’s ecosystem into a developmental hub.

While the Boston Blockchain Association may be making strides in bringing together like minded individuals, companies and organizations that are actively building products in the space, decision makers in the state are now being given the tools and information to drive innovation at a governmental level.

As Businesswire reported this week, a new training programme has been launched aimed at introducing government employees to the basics of blockchain technology and the plethora of applications associated with the space.

The educational courses are being run in a collaborative effort driven by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Innovation Institute.

Blockchain being pushed in Massachusetts

Massachusetts is establishing itself as a leader in blockchain adoption thanks to a positive attitude from the current administration.

The state has identified blockchain technology as a key sector in its 2020 economic development bill alongside a number of technology sectors including fintech, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

It seems the drive is aimed at making the state a location of choice for IT companies and firms focused on developing blockchain solutions.

One of the most notable blockchain projects that is being operated in the state is Voatz, a blockchain-based voting application that has been used for voting by nine different counties and states across America.

The project has been met with some skepticism though following a thorough systems audit that identified numerous security concerns, as reported by Cointelegraph’s Magazine online issue.

Education is vital

While the road is being paved for companies to set up shop and benefit from a think-tank environment being encouraged in the state, the most important cog is the educational courses being set up for the state’s officials.

Online training sessions are being run by Boston-based media and communications company Media Shower, which was awarded a $31500 grant to carry out the programme.

The courses are already underway with the first two sessions held in May and July respectively, with a third in the pipeline. The course material is mainly focused on teaching governmental officials the ins and outs of blockchain technology and how it is being used by other administrations around the country.

Blockchain to improve governance

A key objective is to open up the possibility of blockchain-based solutions being identified as the best way of addressing governmental processes in the state.

Pat Larkin, director of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Innovation Institute, hopes the course will upskill state administrators and open their eyes to the possibilities of blockchain-based innovations.

“A fundamental understanding and awareness of the capabilities and attributes of any new emerging technology are a conditioned precedent to any adoption strategy. We are pleased with the opportunity to accelerate the adoption of blockchain technology through this awareness and education campaign for enlightened municipal leaders being conducted by the local blockchain community,” Larkin said.
