Sweetgreen, a well-known American salad chain, is a company that combines food with the latest technology. Whether it is the first to launch App, the implementation of cash free stores, or the use of block chaining to track crops, Sweetgreen is at the forefront of technology trends.

Sweetgreen opened its first store in Georgetown in 2007, and the “fast-casual” salad chain store now has 87 stores across the country. By the end of the year, the number of stores is expected to increase to nearly one hundred.

Sweetgreen’s co founder Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman and Nathaniel Ru: “technology based thinking” are the most powerful tools of Sweetgreen. Jammet said: “we have been building a digital revolution in food industry. Our investment in the technology team is the same as that in the supply chain team. “

Adds co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Neman: “We were the first to use blockchain as an application for food. We were one of the first in the category to release an app. We designed this new menu for flavor, and the analytics from our app allows us to find out what people are craving.”

In return, the app has powered Sweetgreen’s research. “It’s the main way we understand ingredient popularity, capture feedback, and get smarter with the seasonal products we offer. It also lets us test-drive certain ingredients and see what people are ordering over and over again, as well as not coming back for,” says Neman.

The company went cashless in 2017. At some locations in New York, customers don’t ever have to interact with a human; their food is waiting on a shelf to grab-n-go according to the honor system.

Getting rid of cash might also speed up transactions, alleviating Sweetgreen’s peak lunch lines, which often spill out the front door and onto the sidewalk. The company says that employees can perform 5% to 15% more transactions every hour when they don’t have to handle money.

Some of the reasons are simple: Cash-free stores reduce the likelihood of robbery, keeping employees safe. In addition, the company can avoid the expense of transferring cash in armored cars, they said.

Newman credits Sweetgreen’s dominance to the more intuitive process of its mobile-ordering system: “We wanted to make sure our app mimicked our in-store experience, and we invested in thoughtful food photography.”

Sweetgreen also works with the health App built into the iPhone to help customers record calories. Whenever an iPhone user orders a salad with Sweetgreen’s App, the iPhone will record the calories of the salad in the health App. This feature will definitely save many manual steps for calorie-intensive consumers to record their calorie intake.
