Student organizations provide community for Maya McGregory
KU Debate, Unity Hip Hop Dance Team and other groups have proved influential during Maya McGregory’s time at KU.
Multicultural Business Scholars are heavily involved in diverse organizations and experiences at KU. Scholars are passionate leaders who share their enthusiasm and talents with their campus community members
Maya McGregory completed her junior year and is majoring in international business and marketing. Her impact extends beyond the classroom. During her first year at KU, she was a member of the debate team. The KU Debate team is a six-time national champion, so it is no small feat to participate in KU Debate. Not only did she participate, for every competition in which she participated, she made it the final round.
Currently, McGregory is involved in the Unity Hip Hop Dance Team, Gifted Empowered Motivated Sisters (G.E.M.S), and is a Student Ambassador for The Plug KU. The Plug KU is a central platform for campus resources, events, and information relevant to the Black community at KU, and G.E.M.S. encourages Black women to access their own voices, which will result in and lead to societal change. For McGregory, these organizations give her a sense of community on campus.
“It’s important to have somebody that related you what I am going through,” she said. “Those campus connections get me through the KU experience.”
Through her involvement in these organizations, she has learned valuable lessons that she will carry with her post-graduation.
“I learned that it is okay to share and put myself out there, it is okay to be open to people and talk to people,” McGregory said, adding that when people share their experiences, they “build lasting, meaningful connections.”
Although most of her campus involvement occurs outside the School of Business, she appreciates the space that the MBSP provides underrepresented business students to get to know each other.
“It’s refreshing to see new faces in the business school and hear about their experiences as well,” she shared.
When asked what she is most proud of, McGregory said, “I am proud of the fact that I can say that I have given my all, I have given my full effort.”
McGregory will continue give her all as she transitions into her senior year. Until then, she will have an internship with Cornett Advertising Agency, where she will participate in a program called Building Leaders and Creators (BLAC).
