Kubos and ISISpace Bring Linux To CubeSat Developers
by marshall
Two companies focused on the nano-satellite market have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to make space more accessible to developers and projects using ultra-compact satellites. Innovative Solutions In Space, a Dutch manufacturing and launch services company, now supports KubOS Linux as a choice for their iOBC on-board computer. KubOS Linux is an open-source operating system specifically designed to support satellite operations and subsystems. Kubos provides operating systems, a downloadable software development toolkit, and an online community, OpenKosmos (visit http://www.kubos.co/ to join the Slack community), all at no charge to users and developers. Kubos offers Service Level Agreements to provide support and solutions for missions running KubOS RT and KubOS Linux.
ISIS [sic] has over ten years of experience manufacturing space-proven satellite subsystems and providing launch services for the EU and beyond. They have placed over 70 satellites in Earth orbit.
“We are really excited about this partnership. It’s the first time a satellite integrator teams up with a software company to provide an open source platform” declared Marshall Culpepper, CEO of Kubos Corporation.
Jeroen Rotteveel, CEO of ISIS, added “our partnership with Kubos will enable new creative projects from people within the open source community, and help lower the barrier to entry to the small satellite market even further.”
The private commercial market for small satellites is rapidly expanding, having doubled in size over the last ten years, with a forecast of 3600 satellites expected to launch in the next decade.
