Thanks to inflation, a lot has changed and now we need more money to keep up with the cost of things.

That might be impossible to do if you still earn the same pay. If you earn a salary, you can renegotiate your salary. But as a freelance creative, it’s up to you to do something about how much more you can make.

1. You need to charge higher prices.

This is obvious, but to make more money you have to charge higher.

Of course, raising your price can turn some customers off or you might start to question if the value you’re offering justifies the price. Remember that you need to recognise your value especially when you do exceptional work, and also take note of the rising cost of running your business.

2. You have to upsell.

Offer more value to your customers while they pay a premium price. You can sell an upgraded version or an alternative of your service to customers. For instance, if you’re a freelance writer doing blog posts for clients, you could offer to do additional services including press releases, newsletters, landing page copy, guest posts, and a lot more. Remember to understand your customers’ needs, present relevant upsell options and offer your customers added value.

3. You need social proof.

You’ll have an edge with social proof. The truth is, customers are likely to pay more when there are positive reviews about your work, and you’ve been endorsed by reputable sources or recommended by an expert in your industry.

Think of social proof as an endorsement of your brand credibility. Plus, you’re likely to be more confident to ask for higher pay.

4. Earn from more than one job.

The harsh reality of freelancing is that you’ll often earn the bulk of your income from a single customer. Apart from the fact that longevity is not assured from one source, having more than one job means you can earn more.

To land more jobs, you can reach out to new customers, ask for referrals, use social media, take advantage of third party platforms, or collaborate with other freelancers.

5. Shamelessly self-promote.

Shamelessly talk about the work you do.

Instead of waiting for recommendations from experts, you can use social media to position yourself as a thought leader in your industry. This can also signal to people that you’re available for opportunities.

It is not easy to win new projects or get new customers who’re willing to pay more. Just remember to be persistent and find what works for you. 💜
