Our Company’s First Step Towards Crushing The “Women in Tech” Problem

Women can’t code you say?

I recently wrote a post about how our business would not exist without the women in my life. I made a pledge to do my part as a male entrepreneur to provide a safe, friendly, equal environment for women to succeed in our company. Today I am proud to announce that we are taking the first big step towards putting this pledge into action by hiring our first C-level executive and Board Member who also happens to be one of the most talented people I have ever met.

Kuhcoon is proud to introduce our new Board Member and President of Mobile, Elizabeth Barrett. Liz will be responsible for our company’s entire mobile development strategy, managing a mobile team as we scale, and creating beautiful mobile experiences for our users.

Liz was influential in the success of our company before she even considered becoming a part of our team. Liz and I have been close friends for over a year now and in July I approached her with two big problems. First, our company needed mobile development to keep up with a shifting marketplace and user demand. Second, we needed access to Facebook’s Ads API if we were truly going to take the next step towards empowering businesses to be successful with social media marketing.

Liz’s beautiful iOS app design.

Liz stepped up to the plate and not only offered to develop our iOS app in her spare time for free after work, but also made a crucial introduction to a Facebook employee who helped us with Ads API application process. It was this direct impact on our business coupled with Liz’s drive to succeed that left my co-founder CJ and me speechless.

Tristan Walker has a very similar story of creating value for an organization and landing a job at Foursquare. Job seekers should take notes from both of these stories. In a competitive marketplace the best way to stand out to any organization is to create direct value for their business. We knew Liz would be our first official executive hire when the time came, and that time is right now.

The point is it shouldn’t matter if you are male or female, each gender should have the equal opportunity to reach success in any organization or even create their own. Going further on that point, every person regardless of gender, age, color, sexual orientation, or belief should have an equal shot at success. We only care about a few things in our organization and company culture:

1. Excellence in all that we do.
2. Execution on ideas.
3. Energy that is positive and infectious.

Liz not only meets these expectations, she exceeds them. We are happy to welcome her to our team and can’t wait to give her the freedom to manifest her own success within our organization. It’s our hope that our company can be an example not only to other tech startups, but to every organization around the world. Women are fully capable of being amazing leaders, climbing the corporate ladder, writing code, chasing their dreams, and changing the world. It’s time to give them the equal chance at success and respect they deserve.
