The band also shares a weird encounter with the legendary Steve Albini.

A year after the release of their first single, Dr. Confusion is back with a new single, “Outkast” — styled with a ‘K,’ like the rap duo’s name.

The song itself is a mere expression of asking yourself what to do. A phase that may sometimes be experienced by anyone who’s confused with themself. This may be illustrated by the high-intensity music that wraps the new single.

The track is recorded live — just like what they did on their previous single — at Studio Teras Belakang, with the help of Pandu Fuzztoni (of The Adams and Morfem’s fame.) Dr. Confusion wants to bring in a natural impression to the track, full of honesty.

Despite its theme and the recording approach, the song “Outkast” itself is a bit removed from their previous effort “Anthem for Confused Dogs.” While their debut single leans toward the funky slack rock sound of the 90’s, “Outkast” sees the band leaning toward the driving sound of post-punk with heavily distorted bass, anxious drum beat, and non-stop ramble. If no one told us this band was from Indonesia, we would’ve thought they were a Speedy Wunderground roster from Bristol.

The band was praised by the legendary Chicago producer/musician Steve Albini, after the band randomly slid into the maestro’s DM, asking his opinion on their music. “Sounds great, you did a fine job. If you ever find yourselves coming to the states I’d be happy to work on a session,” said Albini in a Twitter DM, shared through the band’s Instagram.

“We were very surprised ourselves that he even wanted to reply… Man, it’s weird but it’s just crazy that’s why we looked dumb enough to reply it like that 😥🙏,” told the band to Kultur Ekstensif.

The band said although it was kind of unrealistic, “we don't even know what visa is 🏳️🖤🏳️,” quoting from their Instagram. But Steve was kind enough to share a contact of an Indonesian engineer who has worked at Steve’s studio, the Electrical Audio, as an intern. “A new fun fact that it’s amazing to know that there is one Indo’s engineer ever worked at the studio.”

Meanwhile, the band has stated in a press release that they are working on a full album.

“Outkast” by Dr. Confusion is now available for streaming on various digital streaming platforms.
