After releasing their debut EP ‘how to estimate your departure on the ocean floor’ last December, the math-rock/emo unit hulica have returned with a ‘3-way split’ release with cues (Singapore) and Kudaranai 1nichi (Japan), out on 23/7.

Although not yet very connected, the math-rock music scene in Asia in fact thrives separately in their own way. Among the various countries in the Asian region, Singapore and Japan are two countries that are quite active in generating new talents in this area. Therefore, hulica as the initiator of this split album tried to make connections with bands in those countries through cues and Kudaranai 1nichi.

They finally agreed to make a ‘3-way split’ release as a sign of friendship as well as an effort to make the math-rock music scene between Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan interconnected.

“The idea of making this split album had actually been around since 2020. But it took a while when looking for a tandem to fill this album, until we finally agreed with Cues and Kudaranai 1nichi. Not to mention the process of making artwork, layout, and others, finally making this ‘3-way split’ can only be realized in 2021,” said Hulica.

Even though they are under the same belt, each band represents its own unique sound on the math-rock music. This makes the split an interesting release. hulica’s sound presents a slice between math-rock and dynamic emo, cues goes with a more calm and airy math/post-rock-esque direction, while Kudaranai 1nichi brings melodic emo music with catchy choruses to the table.

This ‘3-way split’ is also released in cassette format with three different versions of artwork by KAT Records (Indonesia), Tired Records (Singapore), and ungulates (Japan). The release is also available for streaming on various digital streaming platforms.
