Continuing our journey through the Thirukkural, we move to the second couplet, which highlights the significance of learning. Thiruvalluvar places a strong emphasis on education as a key element for a virtuous and fulfilling life. This particular kural is extremely close to my heart as my key purpose in life is to make education more equitable, accessible and fun for every child & adult on this earth.

The Second Thirukkural: An Introduction

The Tamil Text

கற்றதனால் ஆய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன்
நற்றாள் தொழாஅர் எனின்

katrrathanaal aaya payanaenkol vaalarivan
natrraal tholaaar yenin

English Translation

“What profit have those derived from learning, who worship not the good feet of Him who is pure knowledge itself?”

Deeper Explanation and Interpretation

This kural is part of the first chapter of the Thirukkural, titled “In Praise of God” (Kadavul Vazhthu). This chapter consists of 10 couplets, each emphasizing the importance of recognising and venerating the divine as the cornerstone of all virtues and wisdom.

In this couplet, Thiruvalluvar asserts that mere learning is not beneficial unless it is coupled with the reverence for divine wisdom. The phrase “pure knowledge” here refers to the ultimate truth or the divine, implying that true education should lead one towards spiritual enlightenment and moral integrity.

Recognising the Value of True Learning

In today’s world, this kural reminds us that education should not be limited to academic knowledge alone. True learning encompasses moral and ethical education that guides us towards a righteous life.

Understanding Ethics and Values in Learning

Ethics in education involves cultivating virtues like honesty, integrity, and respect. Values-based education aims to develop a sense of moral responsibility and a commitment to the greater good. For me, this means understanding that we should openly share our knowledge with others and in doing so we ourselves will learn something in return.

How to Foster True Learning

To foster true learning in alignment with the teachings of the Thirukkural, consider these steps:

  1. Seek Holistic Education: Pursue education that balances academic knowledge with moral and ethical lessons.
  2. Reflect on Knowledge: Regularly reflect on what you have learned and how it contributes to your personal growth and understanding of the world.
  3. Share your knowledge with others: Discussion, open debates and teaching others helps to create a deeper understanding for yourself as well as others.
  4. Participate in Community Service: Apply your knowledge to help others and contribute to the welfare of your community.
  5. Engage with Mentors: Find mentors who exemplify the virtues and wisdom you aspire to learn.

Understanding and practicing true learning offers numerous benefits, such as:

  1. Holistic Growth: It promotes intellectual, emotional, and moral development.
  2. Purposeful Living: True learning provides a sense of purpose and direction in life.
  3. Enhanced Decision-Making: Knowledge enriched with ethical insights leads to better decision-making.
  4. Community Impact: It encourages you to use your knowledge for the greater good, fostering a positive impact on society.
