Best of Jodhpur
Rajasthan is all about royalty and so is Jodhpur. Last December we got a chance to visit Jodhpur, The blue city.
Planning a trip to Jodhour ? This post might be helpful. We had two days in hand which was enough to explore the place. Our itinerary was mix of common touristy stuff and some lesser explored places.
Mehrangarh Fort — like other massive forts in Rajasthan, Mehrangarh fort is a huge structure situated on hill. As you walk around the fort you will witness cannon ball marks on the walls , hand imprints of Raanis(wives of emperors) who became sati by ending their lives on the funeral pyre of their husbands, some folk artists and many other historic assets. There is a museum displaying paalkis(carriers) and paalnas(cradle) used by royal family, show pieces, art work, apparels, weapons etc. Apart from this, it offers some nice views of the city. If you want to do it differently, wake up early morning and trek to the fort from blue houses and enter through back gate entry. If you want some more adventure, you may try zip lining in the fort. Check the details about famous blue houses in this post — The Blue houses, Jodhpur
Umaid Bhawan Palace — Umaid Bhawan Palace to Jodhpur is what City Palace is to Udaipur. A small portion of it is converted into museum, another portion is converted to luxury hotel and rest is royal family residence. Museum displays furnishing and decor, art work, family paintings, collection of unusual clocks, vintage cars etc.
Blue houses — can be spotted in old town called navchokiya. Cabs don’t go till end so to reach there you need to take cab till Jalori Gate and then take auto-rickshaw to blue house area(navchokiya). In order to skip crowd we reached there at around 7:45 AM and walked through the narrow lanes and captured some moments. Clock tower — You can check out market near clock tower. There are many cafe near by so you can enjoy a meal at some roof top cafe with a view of Mehrangarh Fort.
Mandor garden and ruins — Before Jodhpur , Mandore was the capital of Rathore clan. Mandore is around 12 kms from Jodhpur. You can book a cab or auto to reach mandore garden. It is a big campus enclosing fort ruins, royal cenotaph and old temples. Once a fort , it is now a ruined structure over the hill. You can walk up there and witness some nice views.
Eating options — You can enjoy Rajasthani thali at Gypsy Dining Hall. It is generally crowded so one need to plan accordingly. Another famous and crowded place is Janta sweet Home. They offer lip-smacking snacks and sweets. Apart from this there are many cafes at clock tower where you can spend time. Another option on clock tower is Pal Haveli, can’t comment on food quality but ambience wise it was good.
Other than these places you can check out Rao Jodha rock garden , Jaswant Thada which again is cenotaph of kings. We skipped these spots.
