When we think about designing our home, we may get excited about what furniture to pick out, which colors to paint the walls or where to hang our favorite painting. Tiles are often not the first thing we have in mind. If you find tiles to be mundane and boring, read on because we will show you how the right choice of tiles can completely transform your space! Whether you are designing your bathroom, kitchen or even your living room, tiles are not only functional but can be an incredibly creative and fun way to play around with colors and patterns in order to achieve unique-looking spaces.

We custom-designed this vibrantly patterned tile and gave it an ethnic flavor. Used creatively, tiles can be more than just dull and practical design features and can in fact help a space to exude a unique character.

1. Pick out designs that harmonize with the overall mood

Tiles are a more permanent addition to your interiors so the last thing you want is a clash between them and the other elements in your room. Before narrowing down on your choice of tiles, decide what look you are going for. See the room as a whole unit where everything should ideally complement each other. Consider the size of your room, the color of your furniture and whether there are any specific patterns or motifs you would like to use. Ask yourself whether you want the space to look minimalistic or rather playful. Would you like to go for a more eclectic style or stick to a more classic look? Are there any current design trends that you are inspired by? Think about whether the room needs to be rather functional and simple or playful and decorative. No matter what feel you are going for, tiles can help complement the room's existing mood or even become a focal point in their own right. For example, a colorful backsplash can lend a burst of life to an otherwise neutral kitchen all the while maintaining a clean and minimalist style.

2. Unify your space with the right color scheme

Since bathrooms and kitchens are often fully tiled up, your choice in tiling can change the entire quality of the room. You can use them to pull a room together by using the right colors. Aim to unify your room by complementing your tiles with the color scheme of the existing furniture in the room. You can do this by picking tiles with similar shades or making things more visually stimulating by using contrasting hues. You can also visually separate parts of the room by adding a pop of color to an otherwise neutrally colored space. For example, you can cover most of the bathroom in primarily neutral tones and add colorful mosaic-like tiles in the shower. Refrain from using too many colors together because that could make the space look too busy. If you are afraid of color or would like to keep a room rather muted you can alternate lighter tiles with darker colors.

3. Print intricate patterns on plain tiles

There are so many different motifs and patterns you can play around with depending on your style preferences. You could choose simple ‘plain’ tiles and use ethnic and more detailed patterns on them to create your own unique style. That said, too much patterning can cause a small room to look even smaller. To avoid this, instead of using a patterned tile all over, place them between neutral “blank” tiles. You can also consider using patterned borders along with plain tiles. This allows you to use busier and more vibrant patterns without over-designing. You can use borders on the floor to partition off space visually as well. Depending on the way you lay out your tiles, they can create interesting visual effects. For example, instead of opting for a standard layout, you could try a herringbone pattern or a brick wall pattern.

4. Express your individuality with custom-designed tiles

The above tips should help you determine precisely the type of tiles you need to transform your space from ordinary to spectacular. But what if you can't find what you are looking for? No problem, just get your tiles custom-designed and set yourself apart from the average Joe! The advantage of a custom tile design is that it can provide your home with a distinctive and personal touch - like pieces of art. However, unlike paintings and sculptures, tiles become one with the walls and floors. They are embedded into the very structure of your home and this makes them an extra special feature. They are a great way to spice up a monotonous space. Besides bathrooms and kitchens, tiles can be used in any room of the house and provide an edge over a simple coat of paint. For example, you can use tiles with interesting textures and motifs within living room niches or even use vibrantly patterned ones on door frames and stairways. The sky is the limit when using customized tiles to enrich the uniqueness of your interiors.

As always, let your imagination run wild and enjoy expressing yourself with the help of these tips! We hope we were able to get your creative juices flowing by showing you how much oomph the right tiles can bring to your space.
