There was recently a startling article in The Age that children are still being hospitalised for preventable tooth infections. In Australia. Yes — a developed nation. That’s right.

‘Horrifying this still occurs’: Extreme tooth decay lands thousands in hospital — The Age

A lot of these problems have stemmed from the contents of whats in the bottle.

The contents of your child’s bottle has a big effect on their dental health

If we are going to leave our kids with a bottle at night, or during the day, we need to understand that those fluids in it can have a significant impact on their health. So it’s important to follow these simple rules to avoid any rampant dental decay that can develop:

  • If you’re putting your child to sleep with a bottle in hand, make sure it’s only water — as water does not contain any sugars that is the known cause for dental decay.
  • Do not leave your child with milk, soft drinks or even juice in the bottle that is known to cause to decay, as they eventually break down into simple sugars. Some of these drinks may even be highly acidic that will erode the teeth significantly.
