Memes have seem to played a large roll in comedy throughout the past 10 or so years. I find it fascinating how deep some memes go, it almost seems like an inside joke. If you miss one small piece of culture you could miss the joke completely. The meme that I have selected above started in 2016 and the content is mock common phrases people say. The form of this meme is the popular cartoon character, Spongebob, standing in a position with his back arched backwards like a chicken and a goofy look on his face. It almost looks like he’s mocking someone. The stance of this meme is that the text is often written with every other letter of the phrase being pieced together with the meme being capitalized to add a “mocking” effect. The background of the picture is that in the episode, Squidward finds Spongebob’s diary and reads that whenever he sees plaid, he has an uncontrollable urge to cluck like a chicken. This image captured Spongebob seeing plaid.

Spongebob meme throughout time:

It first started as a basic meme to depict how people comedically look back at people who stare at them

It then evolved into a meme that mocks phrases people say that annoy others in everyday life.

The meme then got more meta and people used the meme for the opposite reason it became popular.
