Excel is not DEAD, YET! WHY?

What will the next “Excel” look like in 2050?

R.I.P. Excel

Over the last decade or so, you’re likely living in your own world if you haven’t heard someone stating, “Excel is dead”. Love it or hate it, Excel isn’t going away anytime soon.

Why is Excel truly irreplaceable?

Fact 1: Excel is FREE

Fact 2: Excel is dead simple to use

Fact 3: Excel is a powerful data analytics tool — it can perform simple and complex calculations, clean data, automate workflows, visualize data, etc.

Fact 4: EDUCATION — It is something we grow up with, becoming part of our life, just like laptops or mobile phones.

But we cannot ignore the fact that Excel is pissing us off all the time when…

Excel not responding, hangs, freezes or stops working

Every time I troubleshoot problems with Excel freezing and saying “Not Responding”, one question keeps haunting me — “Why isn’t Excel dead already?

I see why Excel is so popular today —Excel has enabled over 750 million users around the globe to feel comfortable working with data. This data point is indicating literally everyone who can open up a laptop can play with Excel.

What is the population of the world in 2022?

“The current world population is 7.9 billion as of April 2022 according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer. The term “World Population” refers to the human population (the total number of humans currently living) of the world.” by Worldometer

However, we have to stop it — stop wasting our lives on fixing broken Excel sheets simply because Excel is not great anymore, and no better tool can replace it!

‘Life is Short, We DON’T Use Excel.’

Over the last couple of years, I’ve seen so much discussion on SQL, Python, or a combination of a few easy-to-use data analytics tools trying to replace Excel. But not much progress has been made.

Among the many reasons, I feel education is a major factor. The whole data industry’s completely missed the mark when it comes to educating the next-gen to learn SQL, Python, and other fundamental skills when they are young, curious and energetic. That’s why, today, many tech start-ups find it impossible to persuade all business users to use their SQL-based tools. People don’t feel comfortable with SQL plus standard SQL is not powerful enough.

Whatever the next version of “Excel” might be like, something we have to start doing today is to help the next generation learn SQL, Python or other low-code tools as early as possible. In doing so, a solid foundation will be laid for sentencing Excel to death in the near future.😉

Byzer might be one of the possible alternatives to Excel…
