Cosmos

Gaia v17 Software Upgrade

The Cosmos Hub has opened the voting period for Proposal #924, which focuses on the Gaia v17 Software Upgrade. This upgrade enhances Interchain Security by adding Partial Set Security features. The update allows new consumer chains to customize voting power requirements, use allow/deny lists for validator participation, and set caps on per-validator voting power and the number of validators. Chains can also opt to be “Opt-in,” making participation non-mandatory for validators, who can set different commission rates. Post-upgrade, Stride and Neutron will automatically become Top N=95% chains with a 5% soft opt-out.

Secret Network: Decentralized Confidential Computing (DeCC) Across Web3

Secret Network’s Confidential Computing Layer introduces decentralized confidential computing (DeCC) to Web3, enriching application capabilities across diverse blockchains. Operational since September 2020, Secret Network emphasizes encrypted data in decentralized applications, offering novel use-cases for Web3 sectors like DeFi, NFTs, and DAOs. Leveraging the Interchain Stack for interoperability, Secret Network enables cross-chain functionality, initially bridging tokens and building applications directly on Secret. Recent advancements in the Cosmos SDK and IBC protocol have streamlined cross-chain interactions, enhancing usability. “Privacy as a Service” introduced in June 2023 has further expanded opportunities through cross-chain confidential computing via IBC and Axelar network integration. Actively enhancing the Confidential Computing Layer, Secret’s developers support major EVM blockchains, offering comprehensive documentation and interoperability with various EVM and IBC chains. Future plans include integration with more blockchains, partnerships for ecosystem enhancement, and integration of new cross-chain messaging technologies. Detailed documentation, tutorials, and application examples aim to facilitate developers’ adoption, revolutionizing Web3 applications with DeCC’s reach across various blockchains.

Ouroboros Genesis Design Update

The Ouroboros Genesis protocol, an advanced iteration of Cardano’s consensus mechanism, aims to fortify the blockchain against vulnerabilities during node initialization or rejoining, slated for delivery by Q3 2024. Recent updates concentrate on shielding nodes during syncing and introducing novel concepts like ledger peers, lightweight checkpointing, and constraints on eagerness and patience. Ledger peers thwart eclipse attacks by selecting peers from recent stake distributions, while lightweight checkpointing allows quick network control during block production outages. Restrictions on eagerness and patience prevent nodes from hastily committing to alternative blocks. The stabilized design, undergoing implementation and testing, targets its first Genesis-capable release for Q3 2024, prioritizing optimization for increased peer counts and eclipse prevention. Preceding Genesis, a bootstrap peer design simplifies node syncing by exclusively communicating with trusted peers until network decentralization is achieved.
