Outdoor clothing brand Patagonia continue to push environmental activism through the launch of a sustainable beer.

As climate change continues to cause havoc across the world, consumers are finally opening their eyes to the drastic changes damaging the planet and becoming more influenced by a product’s ethical credibilities than anything else. Patagonia, a leader in environmental activism, have added to their sustainable lifestyle catalogue by creating their first-ever line of beer, Long Root Ale.

Long Root Ale is produced by Patagonia Provisions, the sustainable food brainchild of Patagonia. Unlike traditional crafted brews, the sustainable beer is made with the relatively new Kernza grain, a species of perennial of wheat developed by Kansas-based The Land Institute. As farmers continue to experiment with the new grain, researchers have found the crop only requires half as much water as ordinary wheat thanks to their long roots. As the plant is perennial, the crop doesn’t decompose after harvesting therefore able to grow and capture carbon through all seasons, all year round.

Patagonia Provisions also brew their innovative beer at the Hopworks Urban Brewery in Portland, Oregon. The first brewery of its kind to be certified to be Salmon Safe, disposing waste water sustainably in order to preserve native salmon. Birgit Cameron, Senior Director of Patagonia Provisions, hopes the usage of Kernza in beer will help reduce climate change and revolutionise agriculture practice.
