La Revolucion Mexicana

Would you argue that the Mexican Revolution “has legs” (i.e., still has meaning and power in Mexican politics, culture, and social relations)?

The Mexican Revolution was the result of the accumulation of politics, culture, and building relationships for the sake of the development of Mexico, however, arguing and greed turned into the repetitive battles that the Revolution was built upon. It was complicated because the Revolution arose due to internal and international issues. I do believe the Mexican Revolution “has leg” or had overall meaning and the outcome reflects in today’s Mexican politics and social issues, as it has influenced the presidential elections to this day. The Mexican Revolution has also become a reminder of the greed and corruption that has always somehow followed the presidential elections. While the circumstances of the reason for the war were harsher in 1910, however, the influences of corruption within politicians are still, unfortunately, present in the previous elections.

The Mexican Revolution is mainly treated nowadays as a holiday or a simple historical event, I believe it depends on who narrates the Revolution events and most importantly, from which side. The Mexican Revolution had a heavy influence on factionalism clouding the decision-making of the country. In 1910, Mexicans conflicted over lands, many of which were taken from them or lost, which threatened the livelihoods of many laborers, which were their only income living and livelihood (Gonzales, pp.262). At the beginning of the presidency of Porfirio Diaz, after their way of living kept declining, as well as their sense of community, laborers began to rebel, within reason.

The Mexican Revolution during all the years, it involved a lot of outside influences as well due to multiple former presidents wanting to build and connect relationships with other powerful countries. There was a need to keep building Mexico by bringing outsiders such as American workers and interviewers to bring attention to the country. However, it only received attention for what others could take from Mexico, such as pieces of land owned by laborers. As soon as rebels started to take back their lands, Mexico gained a lot of outside attention due to the battles.

Why or why not?

As previously mentioned, I do believe the overall outcome of the Mexican Revolution had significance but also one of the main, if not the most influential, revolutions that recreated a whole country. Mexico has always been a rich land and its nature is beautiful, the revolution started as the only solution to prevent corrupted individuals take any more from hard-working laborers. If it were not for the arduous battles and politics of the revolutionists, we wouldn’t have Mexico that is aware of its bad decision-making that affects the whole country. As someone who has lived in Mexico, I was aware of the political climate and social issues. After further analyzing and relearning about the Mexican Revolution, I came to the conclusion that similar patterns follow every other presidential election. Presidential elections also happen so often with multiple political parties, similar to former president Cardenas, who wish to take down the corrupt.

In conclusion, the Mexican Revolution has continued to influence the politics, social relations within and external, as well the culture. The culture will always evolve over time, and that is unavoidable, however, within time the culture within Mexico always pushes to help those in need and rebel. I believe it is within Mexico’s culture when it comes to how politics affect society, there is always a group of people that unite to help others.
