L’ultimo secondo …
« Ieri sera, accomiatandovi dai vostri amici, avete detto: «Arrivederci, arrivederci all’anno prossimo!», e l’anno prossimo è già qui, è iniziato poche ore dopo. Oggi, parlando di ieri, dite già “l’anno scorso”. Tutta la giornata di ieri, fino all’ultimo secondo prima della mezzanotte, faceva ancora parte dell’anno vecchio, sì, fino alle ore 23, 59 minuti e 59 secondi. Al rintocco della mezzanotte, cominciava l’anno nuovo. Se ci si ferma a riflettere su questo tema, si faranno delle scoperte interessanti. Un secondo, un solo secondo separa un anno dall’altro, però si deve arrivare fino a quell’ultimo secondo. Si devono percorrere tutti i giorni di un anno, l’uno dopo l’altro, per arrivare a quell’ultimo secondo. Ebbene, sappiate che la trasformazione dell’uomo avviene proprio così. Sì, la trasformazione spirituale dell’uomo avviene in un batter d’occhio. Un secondo, un milionesimo di secondo, ed egli è interamente rinnovato, rigenerato. Ma prima di arrivare a quell’ultimo istante, ci saranno voluti secoli e secoli di sforzi e di lavoro. Così come avviene per l’anno passato, del periodo che ha preceduto l’istante della trasfigurazione si dirà: «È la vecchia vita…»; e come avviene per il nuovo anno, del periodo che si sta aprendo si dirà: «È la nuova vita!». Quanto tempo si dovrà aspettare per giungere a quell’ultimo secondo? Non preoccupatevi, esso verrà per ciascuno di noi. Perciò, siate pazienti: bisogna saper attendere… ma lavorando! »

Just as with the year gone by, the period leading up to the moment of transfiguration will be referred to as the old life; and just as with the New Year, the period dawning at that moment will be known as the new life. How long will we have to wait before this final second arrives? You need not worry about that, it will come for each one of you. So be patient, you must learn to wait. But while waiting you must work. »
