We are LAB Atlanta. A small group of 10th grade scholars intertwined from schools around the City of Atlanta. In early February we visited CPACS (the Center for Pan Asian Community Services) off Buford Highway, in the most diverse zipcode in Georgia. We were there on a Friday weekly day of Honor. It was the celebration of people and culture indigenous to Bhutan.

As soon as we entered the building, we were greeted by the strong scent of good-smelling Bhutanese Cuisine. When we walked into the community room, many people were dancing together to Bhutanese music.

In the early 1990s, Bhutanese refugees left Nepal due to rising ethnic tension. Along Buford Highway, they found a home.

The CPACs organization has been active for thirty-eight years and with the main goal of “promoting self efficiency.” They provide aid to refugees and help them work towards being able to provide for themselves in the modern American society.

After CPACS, me and my LAB Atlanta fellows ventured out to see some of Buford Highway’s predominately Hispanic and Asian businesses.

BBQ Corner 2, Traditional Chinese Dining
Roll It Up, Hispanic Owned Ice Creamery

Along Buford Highway, we were able to observe cultures far different from our own. It was an educational experience for which I am grateful.
