Have you noticed those huge, eye-catching artworks adorning buildings in Downtown Atlanta? In 2018, WonderRoot arts organization, an arts advocacy group working to improve the cultural and social landscape of Atlanta, began a public art exhibit around the city of Atlanta through a partnership with the Super Bowl Host Committee.

The artwork chosen by the WonderRoot Organization, as well as community voters, were designed to showcase Civil Rights History and appealing artworks around the city for visitors pouring in the city for the famous sports event: the Superbowl.

Our ancestors’ stories are heartfelt and genuine. At times, listening to knowledge from others feels like scripture from your mother. After speaking with a homeless woman on the street, Chavon Vargos a Lab Atlanta Fellow said, “Her words felt powerful as she tried to instill in my mind that I NEED to succeed in order to have a luxurious and better life. I guess in a way she wanted to feel heard and I most definitely listened. I just wish her the best.”

“Beloved Community”

Lab students resonated with WonderRoot’s mission statement:

We believe that social change is both a values system and a path of action: the belief that society isn’t perfect and the understanding that we have the power to do something about it. We affect change through the arts — a powerful vehicle for attracting attention, creating dialogue and changing perceptions.
