On April 16th, US local time, Apple officially announced a comprehensive settlement with Qualcomm and reached a six-year license agreement . Immediately, Qualcomm also issued a settlement and a notice of the cooperation agreement .

Apple Qualcomm jointly announced:

  • Both parties abandon all litigation on a global scale
  • The two parties reached a global patent license agreement and a chipset supply agreement

The settlement includes Apple paying Qualcomm a fee (how much is not said), and the agreement includes a six-year license agreement effective from April 1, 2019. This includes options for the biennium and a multi-year chipset supply agreement. In other words, in the future, a range of Apple products, including the iPhone and iPad, can use Qualcomm’s 5G solution (baseband chip).

Not long ago, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said in an interview with CNBC that Huawei is “open-minded” to provide 5G baseband chips to Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers. However, with this official announcement, speculation about Apple’s use of Huawei’s 5G baseband chip can be eliminated.

Such a rapid “to achieve a comprehensive settlement” and just after Ren Zhengfei expressed his hope that Apple chose Huawei’s 5G baseband chip, people can’t help but think of the previous (April 12) US President Trump and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The White House announced plans to accelerate the deployment of 5G. Trump repeatedly stressed that “the United States must become the actual leader in 5G and cannot allow other countries to surpass the United States in this industry.”

Since Apple has not selected a 5G baseband chip solution (passing Samsung and Qualcomm to communicate 5G baseband chips are rejected, the fastest 2020 Intel 5G terminal products will be available), so the iPhone may not appear in 5G version in 2019. However, Apple may also announce a 5G update plan at the fall conference, the fastest and fastest, we may be able to buy a 5G version of the iPhone in the first half of 2020.

The latest news : Just after Apple and Qualcomm announced the settlement, Intel issued an official statement, announced the withdrawal of 5G smart phone modem business , originally scheduled for the 5G version of the iPhone to provide baseband chip planning.

At the same time, Intel will complete evaluation of other modem business opportunities, including PCs, IoT devices and other data-centric devices. Intel will continue to invest in its 5G network infrastructure business.

Intel CEO Bob Swan said: “We are excited about the 5G and network ‘clouding’ opportunities, but for the smartphone modem business, there is clearly no clear path to profitability and return. 5G is still Intel’s Strategically focused, our team has developed a range of valuable wireless product suites and intellectual property. We are evaluating our options to enable the creation of value, including a broad, data-centric platform in a 5G world. And equipment opportunities.”
