Sports are a huge part of American culture, making athletes some of the most popular figures on Twitter. This includes college athletes, who don’t have the same public relations help and training that professional athletes do. Naturally, this produces some pretty great tweets. At times, however, tweets can be misinterpreted and turned negative, landing the player in some hot water. Let’s take a look at five of the most disastrous tweets college athletes have sent out.

5. Johnny Manziel is done Texas A&M.

Bulls**t like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave college station…whenever it may be

- Johnny Manziel (@JManziel2) June 15, 2013

Johnny Manziel just can’t help himself, the guy loves controversy. Nothing sent the internet into a frenzy more than when he called out his own school while still enrolled and playing football. While it was never confirmed what made Johnny tweet this out, it’s safe to say this didn’t help things. Johnny faced backlash from Texas A&M fans and internet trolls alike, eventually leading to the tweet getting deleted and Johnny reaffirming his love for the school days later. Gig ‘em, Johnny.

4. Cardale Jones didn’t come here to play school.

Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain’t come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

- Cardale Jones (@Cordale10) October 5, 2012

This tweet was sent out at 8:43 AM, so I can’t help but feel for Cardale here. No one likes going to 8 AM’s. Surely Cardale isn’t the first college athlete to get frustrated by his course load, but taking to Twitter to air his grievances was maybe the wrong choice. Like Manziel, Cardale found himself at the center of a media whirlwind and scrutiny from fans. Cardale deleted the tweet, and kept playing school up until May of this year, when he was drafted into the NFL by the Buffalo Bills. For his sake, let’s hope the Bills don’t hold any 8 AM practices.

3. Yuri Wright loses scholarship offers over vulgar tweets.

I can’t even trust my mother what makes you think ill ever be able to trust a b***h…

- Yuri Wright (@YuriWright3) July 25, 2012

Yuri Wright, a top-50 high school football prospect, had his choice of just about any school in the country to continue his football career. Major programs like Michigan, Notre Dame and Auburn were all close to offering him a scholarship. That was until they found his Twitter account. Yuri’s account was filled with sexually explicit tweets, rants about Jewish people and degrading tweets toward women. Many coaches informed Yuri they would no longer pursue him because of his account (which he later deleted), but Yuri did end up getting a chance to play at the University of Colorado. There’s a joke to be made here but I’ll leave it alone.

2. Father of the Year John Calipari forgets daughters birthday.

It’s my baby girl’s birthday today. @MeganteCalipari turns 25. Ellen and I are so proud of what she’s becoming.

- John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) November 22, 2014

And his daughter’s response —

@UKCoachCalipari …. My birthday is tomorrow. #awkward

- Megan Calipari (@MeganteCalipari) November 22, 2014

If you’re a college basketball fan for any team other than Kentucky, you probably hate John Calipari. Whether it’s his shady recruiting dealings, or the fact that he looks like an extra from the movie Goodfellas, there’s just something off about the guy. That’s what made this moment so special. Everything we’ve thought but never been able to prove about Calipari and the type of guy he is, he confirms it for us all with one simple tweet. Atta boy, Coach.

  1. Laremy Tunsil tweets out bong rip moments before the NFL Draft.

Laremy Tunsil, a lineman out of Ole Miss University, was minutes away from getting drafted into the NFL. After a successful college career and crushing the scouting process, he was expected to be one of the first players taken. Minutes before the draft started, however, his official Twitter account tweeted out a thirty second video of him taking a bong rip out of a gas mask. Yup. Twitter erupted, on-air analysts reported the video, NFL scouts were contacted, and Tunsil ended up falling to the 13th pick and the Miami Dolphins. The drop from top-pick to 13th overall ended up costing him about $13 million, according to Fortune Magazine.
