Our last “Expert session” was on Managing Press Relation and we have the chance to welcome the amazing Anais Richardin — Chief Editor of Maddyness. Here you will find the 15 Dos & Don’ts to efficiently manage your Press Relations as a startup.

Settle your Press strategy

#1 Do

Identify the key press targets based on your industry and your audience. A list of 15 journalists you want to connect with is a good start.

#2 Do

Know which topics your target is most interested in and ask for their redactional calendar if you don’t have it.

#3 Do

Propose content :Identify the topics you can have a real value on. You are an expert in your domain, share it !

Get to know the job of a journalist and develop a long term relationship

#4 Do

Understand the job of a journalist : Inform, don’t advertise.

#5 Don’t

Be aware that a journalist will not appreciate when you order them to publish something.

#6 Don’t

Harassing a journalist will not help you.

#7 Don’t

Thursday used to be the closing day for all the press. So if you are trying to get something published, send it before Thursday 5pm or forget it.

#8 Do

The way you choose your Press agency is key and above all it is important how you manage them. Be ready to engage them with a smart playbook. They will be a partner during the growth of your business and the will help you convey the image you want for your company.

Create the opportunity to meet them

#9 Do

Networking & talk during events can help you be visible for the press and increase your legitimacy.

#10 Do

Twitter is the best tool to connect with them.

The more efficient and unique you are, the more chance you have to get an answer. Just for you to know, Anais receive more than 600 emails per day as exemple. So limit the number of click in your email to optimize their reading.

Propose something valuable : Content

# 12 Do

Do: If you want to propose an exclusivity —make sure you connect with the journalist several weeks before in order to prepare the announcement and let him interview the good people.

# 13 Do

Prepare a Press fit with all the details, key figures on the company (creation date, 
) with images and photos the journalist can use if necessary. A google link is perfect.

#14 Do

If you develop a product, send a copy to the journalist to allow them to test and make his own feedback.

#15 Do

Last but not least: Be carefull to spelling. 😉
