Rocket Man is a song sang by Elton John. The movie is definitely Elton John’ s biography. It’s very easy to compare Rocket Man with Bohemian Rhapsody. After Bohemian Rhapsody got the big hit, Rocket Man seemed to be an imitation which wanted to be another hit, a shortcut of a good movie. There are some similar elements of stories in both movies, first, the biographies of famous singers in the same generation, second, the main characters are homosexual and are betrayed by lovers, and the third, the identities of family. It becomes a general recipe for making a biography.

On the second point, they struggled with homosexual identity. The love stories of both stars are described in the same way although the orders are different. They fell in love with coworkers who betrayed them and got close to them for money. They both had a marriage with women once. They both had addictions of alcohol or drugs due to the self-identity and the complexities of entertainment industries. Did this situation happen often in that generation and in the entertainment industry?

On the final point, nowaday the lack of identity from family is the main plot in biographies. It seems that there are no other downs in those greatest’s lives besides the lack of identity from family. Everything they did wrong or every time they were lost resulted from the lack of identity and love from family. With this part, the audience can feel those great people were confused and frustrated, and we can be touched by this kind of defect. My friend said that the lack of love and identity from the family was the reason why they were successful. It doesn’t make any sense for me. Domestic violence happens to many children, but I believe a few of those children become successful. And a few of those successful people are born from a defective family. In Rocket Man, it depicted Elton John was a miserable victim of his family again and again. Keeping emphasizing made me feel the character of the story was pretentious. That’s the reason why I think Bohemian Rhapsody is much better than Rocket Man. In a scene, Elton admitted he was homosexual to his mother, and his mother replied that she always knew and he chose a difficult way and was destined to have no one loved him truly. Elton broke his heart badly and my friend cried out. For me, the first time when I watched the scene, I thought his mother just said the truth. At that time, It must be very difficult for him to find true love. It’s not the right thing but just the reality happened at that time. That’s why society needs to be improved.

Many people said Bohemian Rhapsody was not based on truth, because the biography was changed by Queen’s member. Rocket Man has consulted from Elton Jhon, the real main character. However, every biography isn’t completely true for me. By the way, I found I was more unfamiliar with Elton Jhon’s songs than Queen’s. Especially, Rocket Man is a musical and the songs were cut into phases instead of playing the whole song.

In the end, I want to recommend a cover of Rocket Man from a Korean classical group, LAYERS.
