What led you into research?

I first learned about user research was in a design thinking workshop hold at National Taiwan University. At that time I was just a business student who appreciates art/design, and simply want to explore any opportunities in the two areas — Business and Design. After attending the workshop, it gaves me a new perspective about how design can benefit business and motivated me to pursue a design-related master's degree in Hong Kong — it’s how I officially start my UX journey.

I was exposed to many different types of research before– from market/competitor research to user research. However, what really excites me to do the research is to talk to the user because they can always provide unexpected answers and open a new research perspective for the research team. This is also a reason why I decided to pursue user research as my future career path.

What does a typical day look like?

AM.

  • Wake up no later than 8 and get ready to work
  • Use the commuting time (1 hour) to check/reply messages
  • Daily research work in the office
  • Get snacks/drink to maintain energy!

PM.

  • Have my dinner around 8:30
  • Happy shower time
  • Work on my side projects
  • Read books, watch Netflix, practice my baby-level guitar skills

Name three non-researcher you feel inspired by when conducting interviews and synthesising.

  1. Ketnipz

→ Ketnipz is an artist who creates a character called — Bean. He illustrates this character’s emotions and behaviors in real detail and makes it into a short video. I like how he demonstrates human emotion in such a simple and funny way!

2. Jean Jullient

→ Jean Jullien is also an artist who draws humans based on his daily observation. It’s interesting to see how he paints out people’s and even animal’s emotions that are hard to notice in daily life.

3. Interviewees

→ I learned a lot from each of my interview sessions. It is good to know how people feel and react to a thing in a different way and how they express their feelings to researchers. There’s always a reason or thinking logic behind behaviour and thought for me to further understand and discover!

What would your self-portrait look like?

A short but energetic bean who like to explore the world but also chill at home

Anything you want to promote or plug?

I am reading a book about Maya calendar these days. It explains why each people has a different task and what should we do to complete it….. interesting!
